I got fired from my job today, it was the most humiliating experience of my life

I’ve been a hairstylist for 14 years. I’ve had the same job for almost 8 years. I’ve never had a bad record call, or a complaint, and I’ve had the same 60 regular customers for years. Today I went to get gas before work and the dude next to me threw a lighter at me and it slipped and set my hair on fire. I jumped up and started jumping around and waving my arms and one of the gas pumps lost pressure and shut off and the attendant had to come over and check on it and the other guy was just sitting in his car laughing and watching through his window. I got to work half my head shaved, half with a short patchy haircut and I wasPanicked about what my clients were going to say. The ass parade is going on this weekend and I was cutting a girl’s hair for a wedding dress look, with a ton of braids and a long down your back hair and she saw my head and was like “why do you have half your head shaved, is that a PARADE LOOK?” and I was like no.. and she was like “well then I don’t want that” and she got up and left and that was my 10:15 appointment. I ended up cutting my own hair the best I could at the salon and then just refusing to let anyone else touch it. 5 girls cancelled on me that morning and all 5 said it was because of my hair and they wanted something else. I lost 10 years of experience in that moment. I ended up just going very short all over and donating the rest to wigs for women with cancer. It was the most humiliating experience of my life. I’m so embarrassed. I keep hoping it wasn’t because of my hair and it was just a coincidence but all 5 said the same thing. Never, ever, will I forget this lesson. I could have sued the gas station but it wouldn’t have changed anything. They’re too big. And it wouldn’t have gotten my hair grow back.
