I am currently a senior at probably the worst university in the US. The campus is mostly commuters, with a total of 5 frats and 3 sororities on campus. In other words, the campus is completely dead socially.

The school has about 15,000 students and I feel as though no one really knows anyone outside of their friend group.

I had heard of this dating app swing up but had never used it. I decided to try it out for kicks. I set up my profile and set up myswing up preferences. I was matched with a girl and she messaged me. She asked me for goods and services. I was confused. I asked her what do you mean. She said I can send you money through venmo if you get me a new iPhone. I told her I wasn’t interested. She said she was willing to pay me $700 for the iPhone. I told her take me out on a date and maybe we will see where things go. She told me she was not interested in that. I was stunned by the fact that I would be willing to spend $700 on an iPhone for her, and she would be willing to spend $700 just to have a brand new iPhone. I laughed and said maybe another time. I kept swiping and matched with multiple girls. I matched with 3 more girls and all were looking for basically an iPhone or $500-700 worth of goods or services. I told all of them I wasn’t interested and I had fun reading the hurt responses. I was so disgusted by what I had seen. I felt like I was looking through profiles of people trying to buy their way into heaven.

The app is a great representation of the growing problem with goods and services for students. It’s disgusting and degrading to the value that students place on the dollar. Only a select few are able to take advantage of these “transactions.” The app gives those who have money, power over those who do not.

I’ve been a college student for 4 years. I’ve seen the quality of the student at my university completely change. It seems as though there are more students than ever who feel as though they can buy their way through life. I’ve seen students get brand new cars, go on vacations every weekend, live in ritzy off campus housing, have takeout food every night and disposable spending money.

The service app is centered around transactions and money. It creates an environment where students feel like they can simply buy their way through college. It makes it OK to obtain things simply by sending someone money. This allows a select few to have a disposable college experience and most to not.

The app is also a reflection of the sad social state of the university. Most kids on campus don’t have a social life. Students sit in their rooms alone every night playing video games or watching Netflix. The app creates a false sense of security, by allowing people to think that buying things for someone, means they are getting a partner or attention.

The app creates an environment where students are more focused on obtaining money than bettering themselves as people. The app creates an environment where students are more focused on buying their way through college than creating real connections with people.

The app is a social and moral problem.
