I just student taught for spring semester and got a long term sub job for the fall semester. All the kids have chromebooks because school has gone remote before. I'm new to the school. My mentor is kind of hands off and doesn't care.

My first day was yesterday and I'm really struggling to get the kids to put their chromebooks away. I had to go around to each kid and close their chromebooks and say, "We don't have time for that right now. We can pull them out later." The kids have just now started to listen to me, but they're still pulling out their devices at the end of class to do some group games or something. I'm really exhausted from running around the whole class.

I don't want to take the chromebooks away from them because that's parts of their curriculum. All of the classes for 6th graders are digital and they have to pull them out at some point. They can be used as tools, like dictionaries and stuff.

What do you do to get kids to put away devices? I feel like I'm just a dog chasing sticks.

Edit: Some of you are right. I can't change it. That's just how this school is. I'll stop wasting my time trying to get them to put it away.
