I can see people’s auras, but for some reason, yours is black.

I couldn’t sleep. I had tossed and turned for what felt like hours but my brain just wouldn’t shut off. Eventually, I decided to get up and read a book in the living room.

I walked out into the darkness and flipped on the light, and that’s when I saw her.

The girl who lived next door was standing in my living room, just inside the front door.

“Were you asleep?” She asked. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.”

“No, I was just-” I lifted the book.

She smiled. “Hey, I hope you don’t mind me asking you this, but why do you keep avoiding me?”

I laughed awkwardly. “I’m not. Sorry.” I quickly pulled out a chair at the dining room table and sat down. “Please, have a seat. Sorry, it’s the middle of the night, I’m a little confused.”

She walked over and took the other chair at the table. “My name is Sarah, by the way.” She said. “I know you’re Charlie,”

“Nice to meet you.” I said stupidly. Why was she in my house? Why couldn’t I sleep?

“How did you get in here?” I asked suddenly.

“Oh,” She said. “I’ll get to that in just a minute.” She took a deep breath. “Charlie, I think you know I’m not normal like other people.”

I laughed again. Why did I keep doing that? “What makes you think that?” I asked.

She leaned forward. “Charlie, I can see that you’re not normal.” She said quietly. “Now, I’m going to ask you something, and I hope you’re not too offended, okay?”

“Okay …”

“I want you to answer me as quickly as you can with whatever pops into your head when you see me or hear me talk.” She said. “Don’t think about it, okay?”

“O-okay,”

“Why do you think I’m here?” She asked.

“I-I can see your aura,” I said. “I can see everyone’s aura. It tells me what they’re thinking and feeling, for the most part”

“Go on,” She said.

“For the most part, everyone’s aura is at least a partial green. It’s the color of their aura that gives me the ability to tell what they’re thinking and feeling. But your aura is black, and I have no idea what that means. So I’ve been avoiding you because I think you might be evil or something.”

She smiled. “I’m not evil,” She said. “I’m just not like you, that’s all.” She laughed to herself. “I question whether or not you’re human sometimes.”

I felt a slight breeze sweep through the room as she spoke. I could see her aura flickering with the wind.

“I understand what you mean about people’s auras,” She said. “I can see them too, and the color is the same, but I can also see beneath that. And I think I know what black is.”

“What?” I asked.

“When an aura goes black, that means the person’s soul has died. I think you don’t have a soul, Charlie.”

“Why would you think that?”

“First of all, you’re able to see me. I’ve been alive since 1760, and in all that time, not a single person has ever noticed me unless I want them to. But it’s not just that. I’ve seen you …” She took a deep breath in. “A few nights ago, I saw you standing in your backyard, just out in the middle of it. And you were lifted … I don’t know, maybe three feet off the ground. And your feet were just hanging there. There was no wind that night, but your aura was moving around like crazy. And your feet weren’t touching the ground. I’m starting to think you don’t have a physical body, Charlie. I think you’re a ghost.”

I shook my head.

“What?” She asked. “You don’t believe me? Alright then, try this. Get up and walk over to the window.”

I did as she instructed me. When I got to the window, I turned around and looked at her. “Now what?”

“Pull down the blinds.”

I reached up and tried to pull the blinds down, but they wouldn’t budge. It was as if I wasn’t even touching them. I tugged harder and harder but nothing happened. I groaned in frustration and tried again and again, but my hands simply passed through the blinds.

“You see?” She asked. “You don’t have a physical body.”

“I do too!” I said. “I …” I stopped talking as a cold breeze swept through my body. I looked down and saw my hand pass through my leg. I looked back at Sarah.

“What am I?” I asked her.

“I told you, you don’t have a body.”

“But then why can’t I just walk through stuff all the time? Why can I only do it sometimes?”

“I don’t know,” She said. “But I have an idea.” She motioned me back over to the table. I walked over and sat back down in my seat.

“Can you see my aura?” She asked.

“Yes,” I said. “It’s a brownish color.”

“What does that mean?” She asked.

“I’m not sure.” Truth was, I had never seen that color before.

She leaned forward again. “Alright Charlie, I’m going to ask you to do something for me, and you need to promise not to try and stop yourself, okay?”

I felt a chill run down my spine as she asked me that. There was something about her aura that was starting to scare me.

“Okay,” I said.

She reached forward and placed her hands on the sides of my head. I felt a rush of energy as she touched me. I tried to lean back, but I couldn’t move.

I felt her aura penetrating mine, sort of. And as it did, I felt myself being taken somewhere else.

I don’t really know how to explain what happened. But at first, I was sitting in my dining room talking to Sarah, and then, suddenly, it looked like I was in a forest.

It was nighttime. The moon was full overhead, and it cast an eerie glow on the ground below. Sarah walked out from behind a tree.

“Hi Charlie,” She said. She sounded sad.

“What’s going on?” I asked. “Where are we?”

“I killed you,” She said.

I laughed. “What?”

“I killed you, Charlie.” She repeated. “I’m so sorry. You were an amazing person. But I couldn’t help myself. I fell in love with you, and I couldn’t stop myself from killing you.”

“I think you may have the wrong person,” I said.

She shook her head. “No. I’ve killed you before, and I’m going to kill you again if you stay with me too long. I’ve been trying not to hang out with you, but you’re so charming and so handsome and funny and amazing. I don’t know if I can keep myself from taking your life again.”

Suddenly, images flooded my mind. A gravestone with my name on it popped up in my vision. Then I saw myself lying in a casket, with holes drilled all over my body and wooden stakes shoved through my heart.

Then I saw myself with a bullet hole in my head. With my neck snapped. Drowning in a lake. I saw myself dying over and over and over again.

And then I was back in my dining room, staring at Sarah in horror. I tried to back away from her because I was scared, but my body didn’t move.

I tried as hard as I could, but I couldn’t move … and then I could.

When Sarah touched my head, she took control of my body and mind. It was only when she removed her hands from my head that I regained complete control of myself.

“What the Fuck!” I yelled at her, backing away as far as I could.

“I told you I might have killed you.” She said quietly. “I told you I couldn’t control myself.”

“Well how long have you been controlling me?” I asked.

She laughed. “I’ve been controlling you your whole life, Charlie. I made you think you’ve been avoiding me. I made you think of this book to read. I made you let me in … you’ve never had control of yourself since the moment I met you.”

I started to run toward my front door, but she grabbed me and threw me across the room. I landed on the carpet with a thud.

“Please,” She said. “I don’t want to hurt you. That’s the last thing I want to do.” She walked over and knelt next to me. “I’m … I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” She stood up and started to walk out the front door. I could see her aura retreating from mine. “I just … I won’t contact you anymore, okay? I’m sorry.” And with that, she left.

And it was like a spell had been lifted from my mind. I could think more clearly. And I realized something kinda odd.

I could still see Sarah’s aura. And she hadn’t left yet.

I jumped up from the floor and followed her aura to my backyard. I walked out into the darkness and flipped on the light and that’s when I saw her.

The girl who lived next
