A "content moderator" took a shit next to a statue in my town and stole a copy of the constitution

I'm a journalist for a small newspaper in Virginia. On Sunday, I got assigned to cover the Richmond protests. They were peaceful for the most part: I met a guy who was protesting with an umbrella (I'll call him Sam), but a couple of things he said during the interview really alarmed me.

Sam seemed normal at first. He was a very kind and compassionate guy, and he was really respectful. However, when I asked him what he was protesting for, he told me that he was protesting for "the same cause as George Floyd." At first, I assumed he meant Black Lives Matter, but when I asked him to clarify, he said that he was protesting for "the rights to riot and fuck up buildings and smash glass when a black person gets highjacked, harassed, and murdered." I realized he was protesting for the wrong reasons, but I still wanted to finish the interview.

Sam said that he works as a content moderator for Twitter. He's been off work for the past few weeks, and has been using the time to protest. He went on a tangent about how he wants the statue of Lee to be torn down, and that it's racist to have a statue of a white person. I couldn't see him while he was talking, but I started to get a little uneasy when I heard him walking around the area.

I heard the sound of rustling and he said that he was going to do something piss the neighbors off. He told me that he was going to shit on the lawn, but I assumed he was just joking. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him pull his pants down next to Robert E. Lee's statue. He took a shit on the side of it, then wiped his ass with a copy of the United States Constitution. He threw the soiled paper over his shoulder and started walking away, but I yelled at him to pick it up and throw it away. He told me to "fuck off" and "stop being a bitch." He walked away, and I reported him to the police. I'm really hoping he gets arrested, because he was being really disrespectful to the community and to the people around him.

I know that racism is a big problem in our society, but I don't think that giving in to rage and being violent is going to accomplish anything. I'm really happy that the protests were peaceful for the most part, but I'm also really disappointed that a lot of the reporting has been focused on the violent protests instead of the peaceful ones.
