This happened 3 years ago when I was 20.

I live alone in a ground level efficiency. My bedroom is probably 10-12 feet from the sidewalk. The window no longer opens, the landlord had it bricked shut when I moved in 5 years ago because "burglars". So there is just a pad of cement where the window once opened.

I've always been a very heavy sleeper, once I'm out, I'm out.

That night I fell asleep around 1am ish after talking with some friends online. I remember being awoken by a noise sometime in the middle of the night, and I opened my eyes and looked over at my phone to check the time. My room was pitch black and nothing seemed to be out of place. I looked back over at my phone and noticed that something was blocking my view of it. It was a man. Right next to my bed, standing over me. He said nothing. He was just standing there, breathing heavy, staring at me. I could see his outline by the bit of moonlight that came through my window. I was frozen in fear and couldn't say a word. I tried to kick and flail but my body felt heavy, like it weighed 1000 pounds and it couldn't move. I tried to scream but my voice was caught in my throat and I couldn't make a sound. I had never been so scared in my life. I was terrified this man was going to murder me.

I tried to reach over to the bedside table to get my phone and call the police, but my arms felt heavy too. I was able to nudge my phone off the table and it hit the ground. I felt around the floor for it, fumbling with my stupid hands as this man stood over me. I was finally able to get my phone into my hands and I pretended to dial 911 to call the police. I didn't actually call the police, I just pretended to call and the man was gone after that. I turned on my bedside lamp and looked all around my room but there was no one else there. I saw a shadow dart out of the corner of my eye as I was looking around the room and I ran into the bathroom and locked myself in there until morning.

I didn't dare to look out the window to see if the man was still out there. I called my sister the next morning once it was daylight and told her what had happened. She came over and moved my bed away from the window and we removed the blinds so the man wouldn't have an easy view into my bedroom. After that, I began locking my bedroom door. My room was basically a large closet and the door was inside the room, it's not attached to the outside hallway. So I could get inside my room and lock the door from the inside.

We never told anyone else in my family about this, we didn't want to worry them. I never called the police, my sister said they would have just laughed at me. I don't know if anyone would have believed me. It was really scary to go to sleep for about a month after that. My heart would pound in my chest and I would have nightmares.

The cops did arrest someone a few weeks later who had been breaking into homes in the area through the windows but I'm not sure if they arrested the right guy.
