I accidentally did a pretty terrible thing to my friend’s business, and I can’t tell them because I’d be fired.

I work for a small company. About a month ago, one of my friends (not close, not a good friend) opened his own business, and obviously I encouraged him and everything.

He asked me if I could do him a favor and get him the company’s Groupon prices. I didn’t realize it was a competitive market, so I didn’t think much of it. I thought it was okay to give him them since I’m a good friend. It never crossed my mind that it would be a problem, because it’s not like I gave him the entire catalog.

I did tell him the prices, but I didn’t tell him any other things that I shouldn’t have told him, like the way we run our social media accounts, and other stuff like that. It never crossed my mind that it would be a problem.

Yesterday, I went to his store and saw that the prices we sell our product at are exactly the same as ours. They are the exact same, down to the decimal. I felt really bad, because I had no idea that this was such a big deal.

I feel terrible because I ruined the surprise. Now that I know that it was such a big deal, I feel like I betrayed them. I can’t tell him, and I can’t not feel guilty.
