The United States is one of the wealthiest countries in the world, yet is one of a small number of countries that doesn't have universal healthcare in some form. Having everyone covered is the norm for most developed nations. The USA is an exception in this regard.

I realize that it isn't as simple as waving a magic wand and suddenly having a healthcare system. We already have many parts of it in place. Medicare and Medicaid have been in place for more than half a century. We already have mandatory emergency care through EMTALA, so emergency services are covered. It is not a matter of "socialism" when the government already plays a big role in healthcare and most people want it. The vast majority of Americans (around 60%) don't have a problem with a strong public role in healthcare. We have the money to do it. We have the experience and expertise to do it. All we need is the political will.

CMV.
