It's fun to try to help people who say "I'm not a good cook" be a slightly better cook.

I had a friend say "I'm just not a good cook". This was like a flag to a bull for me, I try to help them make one small improvement to a thing they make. If we're eating chicken wings, I'll ask them how they fried them, and I'll say "Oh, next time, you should try [this small trick]. It will probably make it slightly better." My friend made "cinnamon rolls" that were store-bought biscuits with cinnamon dropped on top of it. I showed them how to mix sugar and cinnamon and melt some butter and roll the biscuits in it before baking it. I've convinced a few people to use vinegar in their scrambled eggs. If we're eating something store-bought, I'll try to guess what spices they put in it.

I've never once been able to make someone into a good cook, but I've made a lot of people slightly better cooks. And I always get some smiles. And I get to learn a bit myself. I try to do this outside of cooking too, and life is just a bit more fun when you're helping people learn things or get slightly better at something.

Edit: I grew up in a small town with a mom who worked a lot. I was one of those kids who was home alone a lot. There was a lot of trial and error and a lot of "yeah, FutureMe, that was a bad idea" and I didn't actually get good at this until I was an adult. If you want to be better at this, give it a try. It's fun!
