Would General Sherman have not been better of attacking Richmond instead of trying to take Atlanta?

Atlanta was a major city and railroad junction, but I believe it was not nearly as important as Richmond, the capital of the CSA. I understand that Richmond was heavily reinforced and that Atlanta was protecting the supply lines of the CSA. But the capital is still an important city, and I dont see how the CSA would continue if Washington D.C was besieged.
