I’m infatuated with her.

Emily is the most lovely, intelligent, and selfless woman I’ve ever met.

And the first time I heard her talk in her sleep, it was sexy as hell. I was so asleep I didn’t register what she was saying, but I remember being gently shaken awake by her soft voice. It was very impressive to see her do something that I’d always assumed to be a male trait.

The first few weeks of hearing her talk in her sleep were filled with the typical things you’d expect a partner to say when they’re dreaming: “I love you” and “I miss you.”

But more recently, things have started to take a turn for the worse.

It started with words like “bitch,” “asshole,” and “motherfucker.” I like to think it was in the context of her speaking to some asshole boss or something of that nature. But something about the words still bothered me.

Then, one night, she said this in her sleep:

“Why don’t you ever listen? Why don’t you ever do as you’re told?”

It sent chills down my spine. There was a stern, hateful tone in her voice that I’d never heard before, and that’s what really set my heart racing.

I’d never heard her speak that way, even when she was angry with me. I couldn’t imagine why she would be speaking to someone like that in her dream.

She was laying right next to me, and I remember I reached over and gently shook her awake.

“Hey, baby. What’s going on?” I asked.

She groggily opened her eyes before responding.

“I was having the craziest dream,” she said.

I was so infatuated with her that I completely forgot my fear and asking her what she had said.

Instead, I asked her to tell me more about the dream.

“There was this woman. A young woman with short black hair and a red dress. She looked really familiar,” she said.

I remember her laughter at that part. It’s a sound I can never Forget.

“She was so violent,” she continued. “I was trying to figure out who she was, but then she started screaming at me. Her face scrunched up and it was terrifying. I knew that I had to do something, so I started hitting her.”

This is where I started to feel terrified.

“Where was this?” I asked.

“I don’t know,” she responded. “Maybe a park like this one. But there were no people. It was dark and stormy, and the sky was orange and vibrant.”

That was the end of the dream.

I never forgot that night. Recently, her sleep talking has worsened.

She says cruel, hateful, things.

Things I can never forget.

Things that I think about every single day and night.

I love her, but I don’t know what she means with these things she’s been saying.

I don’t know if she’s dreaming about me, or if she’s dreaming about someone else.

I don’t know what to do.

I don’t know if I can keep listening to her talk like this.

But until I can figure out a way to confront her about it, I have no choice.

I have to listen to my girlfriend talk in her sleep.

And it may be my undoing.
