Tesla Inc on Thursday widened a sweeping recall over a dangerous issue that affects millions of its vehicles worldwide, increasing the total number of affected vehicles to nearly four million in the United States and China.

The recall involves a software bug related to the Autopilot driver assistance system that can cause vehicles to fail to stop for school buses with their stop arms extended and lights flashing. Tesla’s safety software may incorrectly classify the buses as passenger cars and allow the vehicle to proceed, rather than stop.

Although the recall covers more than 3.2 million U.S. and Chinese vehicles, it does not require any physical repairs by Tesla.
