I found a strange piece of string in my toilet

My boyfriend and I were having a bath in our new home. As I got up to leave, I noticed a strange piece of string on the rim of the toilet. I was about to flush it but my boyfriend told me not to, that it might be something important. I looked closer and it was a length of string, cut to the right length. I was wondering why someone had left it there. I asked my boyfriend what he thought and he said maybe it was for tying up some curtains.
