I’ve been a cop for 9 years and have never been in a situation where a handgun with more than 10-12 bullets was needed.

Title pretty much says it all. I’ve been a cop for 9 years in a big city and have been in 3 shootings. None of them would have been solved by more ammo. I’ve put it in more simple terms like this before on Reddit: if 10-12 aren’t enough, you’re probably fucked anyway.

Edit - Wow, thanks for the awards. I didn’t think this would get this many responses. To clarify a few things, I didn’t write this to specifically advocate for more gun laws, just to throw a cop’s perspective out there. Yes, I know what I carry at work doesn’t necessarily translate to what you should carry at the mall. I think someone pointed it out in a comment that cops are required to intervene and are held to a higher standard in the eyes of the public than you are as an armed civilian. If you are in a mall and some nuts is shooting up the food court, you have every right to grab your family and get the hell out of there. I’m required to engage him. Hence, my point that people don’t always understand cops may need different tools than civilians do. Probably not the popular opinion on reddit, but I think there should be a mag capacity restriction. At least for civilians with a carry permit. I don’t think cops should have limits on their capacity.

Anyway, thanks again for the awards.

Edit 2 — clarification on mag capacity.

In my state, it is illegal to carry in public (on your person, in your car, etc.) a pistol mag with capacity over 15 rounds. At work, we aren’t technically “carrying” because of the exemptions in the law.

This law pertains only to pistol mags. The law does not apply to rifle mags.

The law does not prevent someone from purchasing a mag over 15 rounds, it is only illegal if the over capacity mag is in the weapon or loose in your car/on your person.

The law does not apply to mags you have in your home.

This law applies only to pistol mags over 15 rounds. To be clear, in my state you cannot carry in public (even with a concealed carry permit) a pistol mag over 15 rounds.

This law applies only to firearm mags and does not apply to mags for BB guns, airsoft guns, etc.

I hope this clears it up
