How do those new AI programs plan to make money?

I just don’t get it. They might (or might not) make money in the long-term through delivering targeted ads or something (just like Google did, I mean the 2009 version of Google, not the 2024 version). But how do they plan to survive in the short-term? Like let’s say a billion people use ChatGPT every month. And they generate a billion characters. That means that they need to generate 1000 characters for every one of their dollars in revenue.
