My name is NC. I just turned 31.
I'm writing this because I need to talk about it but I don't know who to turn to at this point. I'm not even sure I will post this anywhere.
My son is no longer in any danger; it's been a few years now. I'm married to my husband. We have a child together.
We live in a six-bedroom house with a pool and an outdoor kitchen in a beautiful neighborhood. The only reason we found a gun is because we're swapping rooms.
There's five rooms on one side of the hallway and six on the other side, including ours. We originally thought we would keep four bedrooms and convert the others to a laundry room, an office, a gym and a reading room.
My husband's stuff is mostly in the office. He's an IT professional, but he works from home a lot. So he has a lot of stuff.
I had a small desk in the office as well. But most of my stuff is in the reading room. I read a lot in my free time. There's a lot of books in there.
We wanted to keep two of the rooms as guest bedrooms. One for my mother and another for his. So our six rooms would be an office, a reading room, two guest bedrooms, a laundry room and a gym.
That left five rooms on the other side of the hallway. We figured we could make four more guest bedrooms and give the last bedroom to our kid.
When we first moved in, our kid was only three years old. So we didn't want to move his bedroom so far away from us. So the five bedrooms on the other side were split up, two for us and three for our kid.
Our kid got three rooms because we wanted his bedroom, his office and his gym to be together. We also figured it would be easier for him to move his bedroom later on if he already had three rooms on that side.
I guess this is a good opportunity to explain how my husband and I work.
My husband works a lot. Sometimes he works 80-hour weeks. He's also a very introverted person. So I do most of the work at home.
I'm also an introverted person. But I'm not as introverted as he is. He's far more extroophobic than I am.
So I'm the one who deals with the neighbors. Being a stay-at-home parent, I'm also the one raising our kid.
I do all of the chores. I do all of the grocery shopping and all of the cooking.
The only thing my husband does is his job. Occasionally he does chores if I'm away from home or in a hurry. Occasionally he'll cook dinner.
But he only cooks the same three dinners anyway.
We're happy. We have a prenup. We have an open marriage. It's not a traditional marriage. But it's not a bad marriage. We do communicate. We do plan things.
We just have very different priorities. He prioritizes work and I prioritize family.
So I'm the one raising our kid and managing our home. He's the one bringing home the money.
I've been working from home the last two years. I'm a transcriptionist. So it's not hard. I have a good income. But my husband has a great income.
That's why we have such a large house.
Our original plan was for my kid to have three rooms next to ours. Then at a later date we could move his three rooms to the other side of the hallway and turn the old three rooms into a nursery, a playroom and maybe a hobby room or something.
We figured he would be around eight or nine at that point.
That was our plan.
We did try to make some changes while we still lived there. Being a six-bedroom house with three occupants is wasteful in our view.
So we used our guest bedrooms. My husband's parents lived there for a few months. My mother lived there for a year.
But none of them lived there permanently.
I'm not sure if it's important. But I should note that my husband's father passed away last year.
He was diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2021. My husband's mom moved in with us then.
She's still living with us. So our house has four occupants.
The guest bedrooms are also used often. If a friend visits from out of town or something.
But none of my husband's family or friends have lived there permanently.
My kid was eight when his grandfather got sick. So that was the original plan, to move his rooms after his grandfather got better or passed away or whatever.
But he was still sick when my kid turned nine. Then my kid's grandfather died.
So we decided to do it. We decided to move his rooms.
My kid gets home from school at three and leaves for school at seven. So we decided to work on the house in the morning. We have people to help us. But I'm a very hands-on person. I need to be involved.
We wanted to get it done quickly. We had a deadline.
We wanted to get it done by September.
But at first, we also wanted my kid to help. We figured it would be a fun project for him to work on over the summer.
He didn't want to.
He wanted us to do it alone.
I didn't want to do that. I wanted him to help.
He's nine at this point. I figured this was a good opportunity for him to get involved. Being so young, I figured he would enjoy it.
I also figured he would be more helpful if he was involved in the process. If he got to choose the wallpaper and the furniture and decide how his rooms were going to look.
But he said no.
My husband said to let it go. He said we would be doing all of the work anyway. It wouldn't be a big deal if our kid didn't help.
Since we were on a deadline, we decided to go ahead and get started without him.
We hired professional contractors. But I still need to be involved. I need to know what's going on.
I was in the kid's rooms while they were knocking down the walls to connect the three rooms together.
I did not find the gun right away.
The gun was in the closet.
In the other two rooms, we were simply knocking out the drywall. But the wall between my son's office and his bedroom was a concrete wall.
So they were drilling.
One of them was drilling and another was unscrewing the closet.
I think the one who was unscrewing the closet noticed it first. I think. I'm not sure. I wasn't paying close attention.
But when I looked over, I saw something metal.
I walked over and asked what it was.
He said it was a pistol.
I couldn't see it very clearly. But I thought it looked like a Glock.
My husband was in the other room. He was talking to another contractor. I asked the guy who was nearest to me. I asked him if he should call the police.
He said no. He said it was my house and my choice.
I decided to call the police.
I asked if I should show the gun to my husband. I asked if I should tell him first.
We had a complicated situation. I didn't know what to do.
I've never found a firearm in my life. I've never even held a firearm. I don't know anything about guns.
I asked if I should show the gun to my husband. I asked if I should tell him first.
The contractor didn't know. He said it was my choice. He said he wouldn't tell my husband if I didn't want him to.
But it was better if my husband knew. It was better if everyone knew. We didn't want this to be a secret.
So I asked a few of the others and they all said the same thing. It was my choice.
I decided not to tell my husband.
I decided to call the police instead.
I thought they would handle the situation better. I didn't know my husband's reaction. Being a timid person, I figured he would not be happy. So I didn't want to tell him.
I didn't want to call the police either. Being a timid person, I'm afraid of confrontation. I'm afraid of strangers. I don't want to deal with them.
But I didn't trust my husband at that point. And I didn't trust myself.
I called the police anyway.
I went in the other room. I told my husband I was going to call the police.
I called the police on my cell phone in the backyard.
I told them I had found a gun in my son's closet. I told them it might be a Glock.
The woman on the phone asked me if I was in danger. I said I didn't think so. I said my son was at school.
She asked if I would send a picture of the gun. I said I would.
I went back inside. I went back in the room. I took a picture of the gun. I sent it to the police.
I waited in the backyard. After a while, the police showed up. But they didn't really do anything.
They just looked at the gun and left.
The one cop said he recognized the gun. He said the gun was used in a crime.
But he didn't elaborate. He didn't say what kind of crime it was or what happened in the house or anything.
He just said it was used in a crime. He said it was going to be locked up at the station.
They took the gun.
That was it. They didn't do anything else.
After that, I went back inside.
I asked the contractor if they had found anything else. He said they hadn't.
I asked if they would tell me if they found something.
He said they would.
I went back to work. We
