Has the concept of individualism gotten way out of control?

I’m Canadian and not exactly sure what “the American Dream” is. I hear people on my side of the boarder refer to “the American Dream” in the way that is very critical.

I don’t watch TV so idk if it’s something advertised on there but whenever I go to the US I notice that Americans seem very by themselves. They can be in a crowded city or standing shoulder to shoulder with someone on some stairs but they will all act like they are alone. Americans are also very receptive to being greedy and seem to take pride in their greed. It seems like a very dog-eat-dog mentality.

I’ve lived with Americans before in shared living spaces and they don’t seem to contribute to the group. I pay $100 a month for my groceries and I don’t expect to be reimbursed and I will buy food that everyone can eat. I have cleaned up after Americans when they left their mess for other people to clean (by weeks) and when I hosted events I paid out of pocket and didn’t expect to be reimbursed.

And then I lived with an American, who was very adamant that I was greedy in these ways. Not paying for their food, not cleaning up the mess I made (even though I had cleaned it up and left them exactly what they left me, weeks worth of their own rotting trash compartment in the fridge)

I’m just starting to think that individualism, and “the American Dream” has done something to the American psyche.
