What if the government has gotten so big and the internet has only amplified the experience, but in reality we are living in a post-apocalyptic society that's masked by the most cunning of manipulations.

Covid was just a test to see how easy it would be to lock a portion or all of society down for the "greater good". It also served as a catalyst for rising costs and unemployment. What if the government knows that there's a great reckoning ahead but the economy and infrastructure won't be able to handle the impending social unrest that will be caused by drastic climate change, lack of resources and food shortages, but the government knows that there is a very small window to help buffer the impending doom by rising costs, surveilling the population, and mass producing goods to stockpile. Maybe there will be a point where we will have to just accept that society as we know it will end, just like many civilizations before ours. What if power will be shut off everywhere and never be turned back on? What if the internet will be shut down and never return? And the only reason that we are able to use it now is to monitor and control us, and to keep us distracted and pacified through social media, Netflix, and other vices.

What if the government has gotten so big that it is not really run by politicians anymore, but instead run by the 0.1% holders of wealth and power? And when they say "democracy" or "dictatorship" they are talking out of their ass because democracy has never truly existed, and it's all been a carefully crafted narrative to keep the population believing they have a say. What if the point of voting was never to actually have a say in society, but instead to train the population that they have a choice, and that they are being heard and protected. What if the government is actually working behind the scenes to ensure a smooth transition into feudalism through militarized surveillance and lockdowns?
