Instead of buying a Christmas Tree from Walmart, Home Depot, or the street corners, plant a tree in your yard from Home Depot and cut it down in 5-10 years to use as your Christmas Tree.

I moved into a new constructed home because we started from a blank canvas. All the homes around us are older, so we should be the only ones with no trees in the front yard. Knowing we had nothing to lose with a small tree in the front yard, I went to Home Depot to buy a tree. Knowing I had no idea what I was doing, I went straight to the section where the Christmas Trees were held in the winter. I picked out a few trees that I liked and asked a Home Depot Employee what they were and how big they would get. I ended up choosing a tree called a ‘Blue Spruce’ because it looked like what I envisioned a Christmas Tree would look like. I also asked at what height should I cut the tree down at in 5-10 years to use it as a Christmas Tree. The employee said to cut the tree anywhere from 6-10 feet so it wouldn’t die as easy with a small stump left.

I currently live in North Eastern Ohio, and the weather here is cold. It gets below freezing with an occasional snow. The tree I chose, Blue Spruce, is a cold-weathered tree that will thrive in the cold snowy weather. Also, with doing this method, every year you walk outside of your house, you get to see your future Christmas tree get bigger and bigger.

This is a ProTip in many ways. 1, it’s a small tree from Home Depot and not a fully grown tree from the big box stores or street corners that are more expensive. 2, It’s in your front yard so you don’t have to transport in when you chop it down, and it’s already in the ground with its roots so the tree will be healthier when you chop it down to use as a Christmas tree. 3, You can take a few years to study and learn about trees, and realize your tree is dying over the 5-10 years you wait to cut it down. 4, This method can be passed on to kids and since the tree is still growing, people will continue to plant trees. 5, You get to see your tree grow and thrive.

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for so much feed back. I’ve been reading most of the comments. Most of you are saying the method I’m doing is unsustainable and the tree will die if you cut it down because it will die with only a stump left. I believe what you all are saying. I’ll definitely keep everyone updated on if my tree makes it to 5-10 years old. Also, I thought this would be a pro life tip instead of pro money as the tree will thrive for the next 5-10 years and it’s out of a bag and in the ground.

UPDATE 2: I just wanted to address an issue that people are saying it’s expensive to buy a tree from Home Depot and then just cut it down. I bought a 3 foot Blue Spruce Tree for $12, whereas full grown trees at big box stores and from the people on the street corners are around $80-$150. Even though you’re waiting 5-10 years to use your tree as an actual Christmas Tree, you’re still saving money in the long run.
