My wife has been peeking at me from around corners and behind furniture. It's gone from weird to terrifying

I was in the kitchen making some coffee one morning before work when my wife popped around the corner and said “Good morning”. Now, this might seem like nothing strange but she, in no way, shape or form could pull off the whole “peek-a-boo” thing. She has never liked to play pranks, jump out and scare people or anything along those lines. It was a complete shock to me when she did this, mostly because it was something that I, as a father, have done countless times to my children.

I was a bit confused as to why she did this and had asked her if everything was okay. She went on to say that she thought it would be a fun way to start the morning. I had agreed, since I was still half asleep and had just wanted to go to work. A day or two went by and it had completely slipped my mind that it had even happened. I guess it wasn’t all that big of a deal.

A few more days passed and it happened again, but this time I had just walked into the living room from the kitchen. She had just peeked at me from around the corner of the wall, smiled and went on her way. Again, it wasn’t until after it happened that I realized she had done it again. It wasn’t until it happened for the third time the following day that I really thought about it.

The strange thing about it was that she had never, in the 20+ years that we’ve known each other, done anything like this before. I had tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, thinking that maybe she just wanted to have a little fun and it had slipped my mind after it happened the first time.

The fourth time it happened was strange though. I had woken up in the middle of the night to get a drink and she was standing in the hallway. She hadn’t said anything. She just kinda stood there until I had gone back to bed. I remember thinking to myself that she was probably just making sure I wasn’t messing around with any other women, but deep down I had known that it was something more.

I had convinced myself that it was just my imagination running away with me. She doesn’t have to work and has a lot of free time so I had chalked it up to boredom. She had always been a fun and playful person, so I had thought that it was just her way of experimenting with different forms of humor. It didn’t stop though.

She had waited until I had gone to sleep one night and had stood by my side of the bed until I had woken up screaming in panic. She didn’t say a word. She just got back into bed and went to sleep. I remember thinking that it was stupid of me to think that she was just trying to have fun. What she was doing was mostly just terrifying.

I had finally talked to her about it. She had made grilled cheese sandwiches one day for lunch and was sitting across from me at the table. I had asked her why she kept doing it and she said “I just ran into someone from work. We haven’t seen each other in a long time. How have you been?”. I had laughed out loud and told her that I wasn’t the person she had ran into and that she knew why I was asking. She had kept smiling and said “I know exactly who you are. You’re my husband”.

This whole exchange was weird. It was one of the oddest conversations I’ve had with her. I remember feeling as if I was talking to someone else. The whole vibe of the conversation was off. It’s not strange for a couple to have what I call an “off” vibe in a conversation every now and then. But in comparison, this conversation would have been an off vibe in a conversation for enemies.

She had held her smile and told me that I was the best and most thoughtful husband in the world. I had assumed that she was just trying to get herself out of the trouble of peeking out from around corners at random intervals. I had assumed she knew that it was getting on my nerves. I had then thought that she had known exactly what she was doing when she was peeking out from around random corners.

So she had known how I felt about the whole thing. The next day she did it again. This time, as I was walking up the stairs. She had just peeked over the banister and smiled. She knew that it had bothered me. I remember thinking to myself that the next time it happens, I’m grabbing her and asking her what the hell she is doing.

So the next day she did it again, as I was walking down the hallway. She had peeked out at me and smiled. I had gotten fed up and grabbed her and said “Listen”… But she was gone. I had just let my hand fall to my side and felt like an idiot. I went into the kitchen and she was sitting at the table. I don’t know how she got there so fast unless she had ran through the hallway at full force but I don’t think that would have been possible.

I had let it go and went about washing the dishes that were piled high in the sink. She was behind me. I could tell by the way I could feel her eyes on the back of my head. I had turned around to the sight of her peeking from around the corner of the counter. This had, once again gotten me to scream out in fear. She just smiled and said “Hi”.

She had stopped for a few days. I hadn’t run into her peeking around anymore corners for awhile and I thought that maybe she had gotten over whatever phase she was in. Sometimes people just get fixated on random things and can’t stop doing it. She had broken this habit, or so I thought.

I was walking through the park on my lunch break and as I was walking by a building, I saw her peeking around the corner. I had started to walk towards her and she was gone. I ran around the other side of the building, thinking that she would be there but she wasn’t.

The next day, while in the same park during my lunch break I had seen her peeking from behind a bush. This time she had stayed long enough for me to get closer and as I approached she had stood up and walked behind the bush. I had ran up to the bush to catch her and she was gone. This time, however, she had left something behind. A note, addressed to me.

It was a small piece of paper, rolled up into a ball. As I walked back to work I unfolded it and read it. It said “Soon, you’ll be the one that’s peeking around the corner”. I had gotten goosebumps and had walked faster, telling myself that it was probably a joke.

So here I am now. Writing this out. Wondering why my wife has started doing all of this and what she means by that note.
