I’m infatuated with a woman named Sophia. We’ve been dating for 3 months and living together for 1. She's the kindest, most beautiful, and fascinating person I've ever met. Every moment I spend with her is heaven.

But, I have this one peculiar issue with her. Every night, she talks in her sleep. It never bothered me much before, as I was used to hearing audio from her dreams that I couldn’t even make out on most nights. However, over the last few weeks, things have gotten freakier.

One night, I heard her screaming extremely loudly while saying “he’s coming... he’s coming... GET READY TO RUN” a few times. I was terrified, no doubt about it, but I decided to talk to her about it.

“Hey, have you ever heard of sleep talking?” she asked.

“Yes, but I’ve never heard you talking so menacingly. Who is he, by the way?” I asked.

“No idea,” she shrugged. “You know how bizarre sub-consciousness can be, right?”

I agreed. I couldn’t deny that possibility. I thought it was nothing more than her brain being confused. However, over the last week, my nightmares are getting worse and worse. Every night, I wake up to hear her talking and shouting. It's always about the same stranger, who seems to be in the woods.

“Don’t trust him,” she shouted last night.

“He’s right there, keep quiet,” she said the night before that.

“Why are you doing this? Stop while you have the chance,” she kept saying one night.

I was terrified because I couldn’t figure out who this person was. It was driving me insane, so I decided to talk to her about it once more.

“Sophia, who is this person? Can you tell me?” I asked.

“No idea, man. What I do know is that it’s just sleep talk,” she replied.

I couldn’t stop thinking about it, no matter what she said. I was suspicious of everyone until it actually happened.

I woke up in the middle of the night to hear her shouting “RUN.”

I jumped out of bed and followed her outside. It was dark out, and the moonlight was casting a shadow over us. We were in the woods, running as fast as we could. We were shocked, breathless, and confused while also utterly petrified at the same time.

“Sophia, what’s going on?” I asked, tugging on her arm.

“I don’t know,” she replied. “I don’t know what’s happening.”

“Who’s that?” I asked, looking back at her.

“I don’t know,” she replied, looking back as well.

I heard the rustling of leaves as a tall, creepy man approached us. He was tall, skinny, and wore a black tuxedo.

“WHO ARE YOU?” I shouted.

“I’m not sure,” he said. “But what I do know is that my wife has been gone for 22 years, and I’m still looking for her. She left a note with directions on where I could find her, but I have no idea what it means.”

“What are the directions?” I asked.

“I need to run through the woods, from tree to tree, following the stream until I reach the cabin in the distance. When I get there, I’ll be reunited with her,” he replied with a smile on his face.

“Do you want to come with us?” Sophia asked.

“Yes, it’s better to have company,” he replied before walking up to us.

We walked through the woods until we reached the stream. It was dark out, and the moonlight was casting a shadow over us.

“This is the creek,” the man said. “I should follow it.”

“Yes, let’s go,” Sophia replied.

We followed the creek until we reached the cabin. The man’s face lit up with joy as he pushed open the door.

“Hello?” he called out into the darkness.

There was no response.

“Zoe? Are you here?” he asked.

“I think she’s dead,” Sophia said.

The man’s face turned white. He was stunned.

Suddenly, a group of people stepped out of the shadows. I saw that they were all holding torches and surrounding the man.

“YOU KILLED HER, NOW IT'S YOUR TURN,” the man closest to him shouted.

The man screamed, dropped to his knees, and burst into flames. The people around him laughed, cheered, and danced as they burned him to death while he screamed in agony.

“WHAT THE ACTUAL F**K?” I shouted.

“It’s okay, it’s okay,” one of the men said. “You two aren’t from around here. The man you were with killed his wife, and this is his punishment.”

“But he was so scared,” I said.

“No, that wasn’t him,” the man replied. “That was his sub-consciousness, and we just punished him. He was hiding his evil deed in his conscience, but we punished him without telling him. He’s dead now.”

“But, why?” I asked.

“He killed his wife,” the man replied.

“This is insane,” Sophia said.

The man handed us a note. “If you want your way out, follow these directions,” he said.

We unfolded the paper, looked at the directions, and followed them. We ran, following them until we were back in our bedroom.

It was morning. The sun was shining.

“What was that?” Sophia asked.

“I’m not sure,” I said. “But we can’t stay here.”

“Yes, we have to go,” Sophia replied.

We packed our bags and left.

It was a long, interesting road trip, but we eventually settled down in a new city. I was on edge, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the previous events. I couldn’t sleep, but I hoped that the city would help us forget what we’d been through.

When we finally settled in, I decided to go to sleep. I couldn’t sleep, but I decided to at least get some rest.

As I lay in bed, I heard her talk in her sleep: “let them rest.”

My nightmare was finally over.
