Wait, what? Yes, that is true. Banning hate speech means that you are banning because it incites violence, that it harms the safety of others. That is why hate speech cannot be protected.

Note:

As @fhsalazar said, "perhaps we should also add that banning hate speech also entails banning speech that singles out a group of people for hate speech."

I'll give you an example, you can't say that hate speech shouldn't be banned because it is their freedom to say that. I'll give you an example: this is from the book "Not Alone" by Sherry Turple:

**Five chapters later:**

"I felt like I'd hit my lowest point. I began to think that I hate my parents, and that my friends hate me. I hate myself, and most of all, I hate this stupid facade of a society that we live in. The propaganda, the fake people, the fake school, everything."

**Two years later:**

"I was through hate, and I was done being lonely. I was done with the poisonous word 'hate' and the people it had brought into my life. I had no reason to keep it anymore, so I let go."

She moved from hate. But she moved to love. Love is not the same as hate. That means that she recovered.

But this is an example of hate speech:

"I fuckin hate this country that I live hate this place, hate this fuckin facade, it's hard to stay here. " - from "I hate this place" by Lil Uzi Vert.

This is hate speech. He did not move on from the hate. He is still in the darkest corner of his life. He did not move on. He's still in his darkness. He did not move on.

That is the difference.

Hate speech incites violence. But the other hate speech does not. Does that make sense?

It's like the difference between facade and fake.Facade means a disguise. Fake means someone pretending to be someone else. A fake smile is not a facade, it's a fake. A fake is the smile, a facade is the disguise.

So, you're not banning hate speech because it's hate speech. You're banning because it incites violence. That is why hate speech is not protected.

It's like the difference between communist and facade. One means bad, the other is a disguise.

Note that hate speech is not the same as free speech. One is inciting violence, the other is not.

And another note, this is not saying that hate speech is good. But, if hate speech does not incite violence, it's not considered hate speech.
