I(26M) will be getting a vasectomy before i start looking for romantic relationships that involve, well in my personal interpretation - being sexually intimate. I'm not trying to burn bridges or incite any debate (I'm not gay, I'm straight), but from my perspective - People with uteruses can get permanent birth controls that are often covered by insurance without ever being required for sterilization to go through counseling or the hoops and barriers that men have to go through when it comes to not just getting a vasectomy but getting a vasectomy reversal. Which i have recently discovered isn't a simple reversal process if you want to be able to have children.

I am personally not ready for a long-term relationship but i am sexually active and my primary methods of birth control are condoms (which I'm not a fan of) and birth control pills. I am not a fan of the pill on any woman because of the side effects and the health risks it has.

My reason for getting a vasectomy is getting sterilized and not having to worry about 1. pregnancy and 2. being a provider to someone I don't know. I don't want to be a Provider and I don't want to be a baby daddy. I want to be a partner and a father. For that, I want to be in a long-term relationship where I can trust my partner and see signs that they want to start a family as well. I also want to make sure that my partner and myself are financially stable and emotionally/psychologically fit to be parents.

My reason for not getting a vasectomy reversal is getting sterilized and not having to worry about being a provider to someone I don't know. It's not fair to expect a child to grow up in a broken home.

My reason for choosing a vasectomy without a reversal is because i want to make sure that my partner is serious about becoming a parent and willing to accept the consequences that come with becoming a parent. I've recently been made aware that Vasectomy Reversal is a more complicated process and that it's almost a certainty that i will no longer be able to have kids. I use to think that it was like "uncutting" yourself- I was wrong.

I don't want to be tied down to a relationship or have to be legally/financially responsible for being a provider to a child I don't know. I do not want to risk being a deadbeat dad and a lot of research into the U.S. family court system has fatally destroyed my confidence in the American family court system. I am not a fan of single mothers or single dads, not because of stigmas, but because I believe that you can't properly parent a child alone unless you are financially/physiologically/emotionally/psychologically fit for the responsibilities of parenting. Which in my opinion is a large responsibility that cannot be underestimated.

I want to build a life as a partner, build a loving relationship that eventually leads to starting a family. I do not want to rush into a family without having a solid rocky foundation that my partner and i built together. I want to know that i and my partner is fit to be a parent. I want to know that we are financially stable and can afford to provide for our children. I want to be sure that before i decide to be a parent - I am prepared to do whatever it takes to be a fit parent.

It is not in my plans to become a parent right now - I want to continue my education - i want to build my career - i want to find a partner and build a solid foundation for a relationship. This takes time. I won't be ready to be a parent for a few years.

For that- I am choosing to be sterilized - to make sure that i am not responsible for creating a life without being sure. I want to make sure that i am ready for the consequences that come with being a parent.

Quite frankly - I think anyone who is sexually active should be considering sterilization if they are not ready to become parents - I don't see any signs of the U.S. Legal system changing soon.

I don't have time for shaming or anyone who is willing to chastise me for something they wouldn't understand.
