My wife and I have been together for 25 years. We were married young, and as we both grew older together, it became obvious that we were incompatible. We hated each other, but neither of us could afford to end the marriage.

We had bought a house with a garage that was bigger than it needed to be, so my wife had placed a desk in there and started a small business to make extra money. Soon her business was making more than she made at her regular job, and she was able to quit, and hire me to work in the garage. Suddenly, we were making more money than we had ever made before.

But she didn't trust me. Not even a little. She trusted me even less than she liked me. She said she was afraid that one day I'd get fed up with her and leave her broke. That's why she made me sign a contract. I would have full access to all her assets, but in exchange, she would have full control over me. She'd be my boss, and I'd work under her. As soon as she'd die of old age, or whatever, the contract would end. But if I ended it before that, all the money we had accumulated was hers. We were to keep it a 100% professional relationship. Boss and worker.

It was a good offer, but I couldn't let my pride down. I was angry with her, but not angry enough to leave. I accepted the contract. The first few months were alright, it was just putting boxes in the garage. I had a lot of free time, and I had no reason to complain. It was an easy job. Living in a big house while being an alcoholic with a free job. Alright.

One day, my wife came down to the garage. She told me that she wanted to bring more jobs in the house. She was going to take on more clients, and I would have to take on more work. She took off her sweater, and I saw her new implant. A small screen on her back. I could control it from my desk. She said that it would send all the jobs I had to do to the screen. Specifically, it would show an address. Every job was to be done at the same address. But I had to go alone. Our car had a GPS, and it would take me there every time. No detours. No passengers. It was a job that required one person. She said that if I obeyed her, I'd be set for life. I had no intention of not obeying her, I was already set for life.

The next day, I got into the car and followed the GPS' instructions. It showed me the way to a warehouse. I parked the car and walked to the door. It was locked, but I had the key. I unlocked it, and walked in. There was an elevator waiting for me. I rode it to the top of the building. When the doors opened, I had to blink away the light. It was a big room with lots of computers and buttons. There were a lot of people there. That was weird, I thought my wife said that I was the only one in the job. But who am I to question her?

One of them came to me. He had a red vest. The others were wearing blue ones. He was the boss. I was the only employee. He directed me to a small room in the corner of the main room, and showed me to the chair. It was a very comfy one, I'll give him that. He sat in the chair across from me.

Then he explained to me what my job was. That I was going to sit in the room I just walked in, and watch the camera on the screen in front of me. There was already a chair there, and I had to sit it in. I could only stand up to pee. I had to watch the camera at all times. I wasn't to sleep. I wasn't to blink. I wasn't to close my eyes. I had to watch something.

Then he showed me what I was going to watch. It was a room. There was a girl with no windows. She didn't even have a door. It was just 5 walls. She didn't even know anyone else existed. She grew up in there. She had some toys to play with, but they were all the same. Essentially it was a room with a ball in it. She didn't know that the ball wasn't her only toy. She had no clothes, no food, no water. She had no need. She had a toilet, but it was just for show. She didn't have to poop. She didn't have to pee. She didn't have to die. She could live forever, and her body wouldn't decompose any further. She was the only one of her kind.

I had to watch her. She had to be happy. I had to watch her, and make sure she never got sad. She had been in the room for as long as she had been alive. She had never seen another person, and she didn't even know there was such a thing. She had never had any experiences outside of her room, and she didn't even know that there was an outside. There was only the room.

She grew up thinking the room was the world, and the world wasn't such a nice place. Suddenly, one day, she started crying. Just a little, but it was enough to trigger the alarm. I had to watch her, and that was it. I couldn't even talk to her. But I had to do something. I called my boss, and he said he'd take care of it.

The camera flickered, and then the girl wasn't crying anymore. It flickered again, and she was smiling. I was relieved. I went back to watching her. She was happy. She was playing with her ball, and her toys. She had a small doll that she carried with her everywhere. He was a small purple man with a green hat. She called him "Mr. Possibly".

She had just grown up. She had had her first period. I had never seen it before, but I could tell because of the blood. She didn't understand what was happening. She started crying again, and I called my boss. He said he couldn't do anything. I had to watch her. She was going to be sad. The alarm started ringing, and I could do nothing.

I realize that this may seem like a minuscule thing to you, but imagine watching a child you don't know grow up in front of you. You have to watch as she struggles, as she has her first menstruation, as she discovers that she can't leave her room. Imagine being there, watching her cry, as she finds out that the world isn't a nice place. Imagine having to live through all of that, every day, for years. Imagine how you would feel. I'm gonna stop here for a second.

As I sit here, writing this, I can't help but remember her. She was like my child. She was my only friend in that room. I liked her. She was sweet, and nice. She cared for others. She was selfless. And yet, I had to watch her suffer. I had to watch her cry, as she grew up alone. I had to watch her fear, as she realized she was trapped. I had to watch her horror, as she realized she couldn't die. And I had to do nothing. I had to watch, as she grew up.

I did that for 15 years. I watched her. She grew up. She liked to read the books that they gave her. She liked the purple stories. She didn't like the green stories, and she hated the red stories. She didn't like the pictures. I liked her. I know it's weird, but I'd been watching her for 15 years. I felt like a parent. A parent who watched as his child grew up and lived trapped in a room. I wanted to help her. I wanted to hug her, to tell her that everything was alright. But I couldn't. I had to sit in the chair and watch her. I just had to sit there, and watch.

I could go to the bathroom whenever I wanted, but only when I wanted. I couldn't leave the chair for anything except to go to the bathroom. I had to sit down. I had to watch her. I could eat while watching her, but only if I ate in the chair. I could only stand up to go to the bathroom. That was the rule. I had to watch her. I had to sit down. That was my life.

One day, I decided to end it. I couldn't do it anymore. I stood up, and walked to my boss. He was angry, and he looked at me like I was scum. He was right. I was scum. I was a piece of shit. I watched a girl grow up in a room. I watched as she lived her whole life in there. I watched as she grew old. I watched her. I watched the woman she became. I couldn't watch anymore. I stood up, and I walked to my boss. I told him I couldn't do it.

He said he couldn't do anything. That if I ended the contract, my wife would sue me. I didn't care. I wasn't going to sit there and watch that woman die of old age. I would watch her grow old, but not die. She'd live forever. I couldn't watch that. I couldn't watch anymore.

I walked out of the room, and never came back. My wife is suing me. My boss is suing me. The government
