Background: 12 years as a teacher, lots of various classes and students, HS and college. Hard classes and, most recently, classes for students with learning difficulties. Also teach part time at a local community college. This is a story about a kid at the college.

In my 4th year at this college, I've faced some challenges (mostly related to student behavior) that other classes haven't. I'm only 5' tall.... apparently this is intimidating to no one. I've had some good luck as the college is very good at responding to behavioral issues, though other classes have seen issues continue, possibly because the professor is a man. In my case, the college actually called the local police department and had them come to class to support a situation. That was more of a disruption than anything else. But, I don't mind because getting support means I'm protected.

This week.... this week has been an adventure. I have a student who is very bright. In the hard classes, I knew he could do the work, it was just about motivating him. In my easiest class, he had a bad day, and was not doing the work that I asked him to do (in classwork and online assignments). I asked him to meet with me after class to talk about his work. He was very resistant to this, which I found confusing. I told him that I was worried about his grades and that I wanted to talk to see how I could help. He then started using degrading language towards me, and saying that I was "too concerned"... which I assumed meant I was too caring. After class, he came to my office, and asked me where I was from, then he said "you're not from around here (other side of the state), so I'm going to teach you a lesson." He then stood up, puffed out his chest, and started to walk towards me. I watched as he started to walk towards me. I backed up as he started to get closer to me to protect myself. I then asked him why he was trying to intimidate me... at which point, he started punching the wall above me. I told him to stop and asked him why he was doing this. He started again, so as he was closer, I moved to the right side (I'm only to the left of him) and was now out of his sight. I called campus security on speaker phone and told him I was going to send them his way as I did not feel safe. He left and hung up on me.

The interesting part is that the campus safety department had a note on this student for previously threatening a professor with violence. So, of course I filed the incident report. I took a picture of the hole in the wall and sent it to them. Through the grapevine, I heard that he won't be allowed to be on campus for the next 30 days. As well, they will be hiring a private investigator to build a case to be able to remove him permanently as he will have violated the code of conduct policy for violent threates. I'm a bit surprised at this outcome. I assume this has something to do with the college trying to build a better reputation.

TL;DR - a student threatened me and is being removed from the college. This is a much better outcome than the other stories I've seen here in which the teacher is told that they are being too harsh when the student displays threatening behavior.
