Why isn't the US more interested in becoming energy independent? Or saving money on trading oil?

It seems US relies a lot on oil and gas imports for various reasons. Is it a strategic choice? Why doesn't the US invest a lot more into becoming energy independent as it would also probably save money in the long run by cutting down on oil and gas imports. <br><br>I may be missing some other benefits?
