It's clear to me that democracy has become a failure in the United States. The political polarization has never been worse, and the political divide seems to be widening each year. The Democratic Party has become radicalized toward socialism, and the Republicans have been radicalized toward authoritarian nationalism. Many conservative media outlets (like OAN) even openly advocate for violence against the other side. The government is no longer functional with one side constantly trying to prevent the other side from accomplishing anything. Democratic institutions like the Supreme Court are no longer independent, but heavily politicized.

It's clear that many citizens are not capable of voting for the betterment of society as a whole; they are only interested in preserving their own cultural identity while other minorities suffer.

Most importantly, perhaps, is the fact that most politicians who get elected to higher offices no longer live in the same world as the citizens they govern. They are out of touch with the average citizen. Many politicians are billionaire millionaires who live lives of luxury, and have no idea how hard it is to live paycheck to paycheck. They are more interested in protecting the wealthy and large corporations than in protecting the common man. Citizens United allows large corporations to make unlimited campaign donations, thereby influencing government policy for the benefit of the wealthy rather than the common man.

Finally, democracy only exists to prevent a tyranny of the minority. A well-functioning democracy is supposed to protect the rights of the minority, but in the United States, the minority is no longer protected. The Republican Party controls Congress and the Presidency in many states, thereby disenfranchising the minority (like African Americans) in those states.

***Proposal:***

The United States should adopt a technocratic system of government. Each state should hire a team of experts in various fields of science (biology, physics, economics, psychology, etc.) and these experts should make decisions on behalf of the citizens in a fully transparent manner. Each state could have an independent group of experts, and the federal government could also have a group of experts. The experts would make decisions based on scientific research rather than on the whims of uninformed emotions. The experts would be required to follow a strict ethical and moral code, including the Hippocratic Oath (do no harm).

***Why this would be better than democracy:***

In a technocratic system of government, the government will be ruled by reason and science rather than by uninformed emotions and whims. The experts will be required to look at the long-term consequences of their decisions rather than making decisions based on short-term political goals. A technocratic government would be more functional and effective, as experts would be making decisions based on research rather than on political ideology. Minority rights would be protected by the experts, who would be required to follow a strict ethical and moral code. The wealth gap would be bridged as experts understand how wealth inequality can lead to social unrest and instability.

This post has been cross-posted to r/unpopularopinion and r/politics.

***EDIT:***

This may be a duplicate with a previous CMV post. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do that, but I have posted the same idea to r/unpopularopinion and r/politics.

Thanks for the awards.

***EDIT 2:***

A similar idea has been implemented in Italy in 2020, when the Italian government appointed a taskforce of experts to manage the COVID crisis. The experts were given full authority to make decisions without the input of politicians.

***EDIT 3:***

I'm getting a lot of comments saying that our current government is a technocracy because there are scientists in the government. This is not what a technocracy is. A technocracy is a system of government where *only* experts are allowed to make decisions. In the US today, the experts are overruled by politicians on a regular basis. In a technocracy, there would be no politicians.

***EDIT 4:***

I'm getting a lot of comments saying that experts in science disagree on everything. Just because experts disagree on many things doesn't mean that a technocratic system of government would be worse than democracy. For example, 100% of climatologists agree that human-made climate change is real. Most scientists also agree that wealth inequality is a destabilizing force in society. There is a scientific consensus in many fields that democracy ignores. Democracy would be improved by incorporating science into the decision-making process.

***EDIT 5:***

I'm getting a lot of comments saying that experts can be corrupted. Democracy also has corruption. Just because experts can be corrupted also doesn't mean that a technocratic system of government is worse. At least in a technocratic system of government, the decisions would be based on scientific evidence that can be verified by anyone.

***EDIT 6:***

I'm getting a lot of comments saying that experts are out of touch with the common man. At least in a technocratic system of government, the experts would be required to follow a strict ethical and moral code, like the Hippocratic Oath.

***EDIT 7:***

I'm getting a lot of comments saying that a technocracy is a system of government where the experts make decisions to benefit the business and technological elite. That's not a technocratic system of government. That's a technocratic system of government that has been corrupted. I'm referring to a technocratic system of government that functions properly, without corruption.

***EDIT 8:***

I've had a few comments asking for specifics; what departments would the experts in a technocratic government manage? Here is a list.

1. Environment Department: experts in biology, ecology, conservation biology, climate science
2. Economy Department: experts in economics
3. Health Department: experts in epidemiology, virology, immunology
4. Infrastructure Department: experts in physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering
5. Education Department: experts in psychology
6. Defense Department: experts in physics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering
7. Agriculture Department: experts in biology, botany

***EDIT 9:***

I'm getting a lot of comments saying that the US is not a democracy, it's a Republic. I'm referring to the system of government we currently have. Whatever you want to call it, it's still a system of government that has failed, and a new system of government is needed.
