Someone Has Been Watching Me

This is a convoluted story and it's been some years, so details are foggy, but here's what I remember and how it happened.

In 2015, I was in the middle of a divorce. It was messy, I was 8 months pregnant with our second child, and it was the lowest point of my life.

One day, I came home from work and found that my car keys were missing. I tore the house apart and couldn't find them, so I called for a taxi to take me to the store for some sugar and coffee.

I was living on fumes at the time, so I didn't have enough money, and I told the driver I only had about $1.50 on me, and that I was going to go into the store, ask to borrow $8 (my remaining balance and tip), go to the bank, get money, and then pay him back.

Now, each of these locations were a couple of blocks apart, so it was about a 6 block walk. So I went into the store, the clerk knew me (small town) and loaned me the $8.

I went to pay the driver, and he's still in the car. I give him the $8 and my remaining $1.50 and tell him to keep the change and drove off.

I walk to the bank, withdraw $20, and go back to the store to pay the clerk back.

When I walk in the store, the clerk is giving me the weirdest look.

"you just left here, right?" she says.

"Yes, I did."

"Well, you just paid me back, right?"

Again I reply in the affirmative.

"I think you should call the cops," she says. I ask her why and she tells me why.

It was around 4pm when I called the taxi, and about 4:20 when I went into the store to do the above. Well, apparently at 4:15, I showed up, gave the taxi driver $8 and told him to keep the change, and left. Then, at 4:17ish, I showed back up, paid her the $8 and left again.

This was the weird part; I only called *one* taxi. The clerk told me that the first cab showed up at 4:10ish and waited for me. I didn't show up in the first cab, but the second one showed up at 4:20ish, and it was me driving it.

The cops showed up and did some digging. The cab company said that the driver I first called never showed up, as his shift was over at 3:45.

They found the car a few days later, completely gutted, about 7 miles out of town.

Weird as all hell.

EDIT: Holy. Shit. I've never seen a post blow up like this before. I know it's not the typical "guy in the backseat" or "extremely scary thing that happened in woods that were clearly haunted", but I'm glad people enjoyed it.

To answer some questions:

\* The clerk was a good friend of mine. We had been close for about 8 years (i was 28 at the time) and I knew she wouldn't mess with me like that. I think that's why the cops took me more seriously.

\* No one ever caught the person. I didn't have any real enemies, and the police tried to wring some kind of information out of my soon-to-be ex-husband, but he had a pretty solid alibi.

\* I did start carrying pepper spray after that. Not for any inherent danger, but it just made me feel better.

\* There has been a bunch of talk about the taxi driver. I was surprised at the amount of people who don't know that some cab drivers drive cabs as independent contractors; they pay rent for the car, or they own it, or many other arrangements. This was the case here. I guess most people haven't called a cab since the advent of Uber?

\* a few people have asked me if I remember anything from the time between 4:10 and 4:20. Honestly, no. I don't remember anything between 4:10 and 4:20. I even went to a hypnotherapist to try to see if I could remember anything, and nothing. I was hoping that maybe I had amnesia or something and could get some sort of disability out of it, haha. Nope.

\* There's a lot of talk about the logistics and a lot of questions about how it was done. To be honest, I don't know enough about cars to be able to figure it out, and I doubt I ever will.

EDIT 2: As I stated above, I was 28 at the time of this event, and it was 2015. I didn't have Twitter or Reddit at this time, and FB was relatively new to me, so pardon me if I'm not responding to anything. I've never had any experience with AMAs or anything, and I'm still in a bit of shock. I'm trying to respond and keep up with everything, but it's a bit overwhelming.

Again, thank you for your interest and for making me internet coquette of the month or whatever this means.

EDIT 3: I've read a few things stating that I was afraid of my ex husband and that he was abusive to me. That's not the case. He just cheated on me repeatedly through our relationship and we were on the rocks. He's a great guy otherwise, and we've been on amicable terms since our divorce was finalized.

EDIT 4: I've gotten a few messages asking for an update on my children. My son is 7 and my daughter is 5, and both are well and happy. Their main focus in life is who gets to walk the dog and who gets to feed her. They're very happy and healthy.

EDIT 5: A lot of people have asked why I didn't go to a therapist about this. At the time, money was extremely tight. I had a 2 year old and was 8 months pregnant. I think you can guess where my priorities were at the time, and it wasn't therapy. After the divorce was finalized, things got substantially better and I was able to get therapy for my depression and anxiety.
