What is the deal with package deals?

It has never made sense to me when companies offer a free trial, and then automatically charge you for something when the "free trial" ends. Companies always claim that they gave you the 30 day free trial, but they took down your credit card information. It never made sense and it has always seemed very shady. Has there ever been companies that have been in trouble for this?
