This is the first thing I’m posting on this sub, and it concerns something that really annoys me: the lack of distinction between the balance of trade and national debt.

A simple point about the national debt is that just because the US runs a national budget deficit each year doesn’t automatically mean we run a trade deficit. And vice versa.

When you run national budget deficits, you can finance them with either domestic debt or foreign debt.

So, if you run a budget deficit and finance it with domestic debt, you can run a budget deficit without running a trade deficit. And vice versa.

The right wingers love the above point and hate pointing out that when you run a budget surplus you can run a trade deficit and vice versa.

This is what loved by the right wingers and hated by the left wingers.
