Why I won’t let my baby sleep on my chest

So I have a 4 month old baby and we’re starting to get into our own now. We have a routine and I do most of the overnight shifts, I take him to daycare and my wife works from home and takes care of him.

When I put my baby in his bed he always wakes up. And if I breastfeed before putting him to bed, he always wakes up after 30-40 minutes because he is so hungry again.

This has been a problem for the first 3-4 months, and it’s getting worse. He wakes up, screams, I try to sooth him, but nothing works.

So I started to sleep with him on my chest and it’s honestly worked really well. I’ve had more than one nurse tell me I’m doing everything right and they are impressed with how much sleep we both get.

But my wife is really against it, she says that we need to set boundaries for him so he knows how to self soothe and that sleeping with him is unhealthy. She’s a big believer in the baby sleeping on his own, and she says that I’m just lazy because I’m scared to set boundaries and do what needs to be done.

I don’t know what to do. I’m so tired and I know that I’m doing everything right and I know that it’s working.
