TIL: Israel's Separation Barrier

**TL - DR: The Separation Barrier built by Israel along the West Bank is actually a fence in the majority of the cases, it separates israelis from palestinians and their terror attacks, it allows both countries to control and protect their own borders, and is not an apartheid wall. The name "seperation wall" is a lie designed to manipulate you into forming a negative opinion about Israel without doing any further research.** I recently found myself in an argument with a close friend of mine, who has a very negative opinion about Israel. - He is far from being an anti-semite, but the information he got from social media and the mainstream media convinced him to hate Israel and its citizens. Meanwhile he uses his freedom of speech to express his ideas about Israel, he doesn't realize how palestinians would not give him this freedom if they were to ever control all of Israel. - He asked me multiple questions, and I found myself explaining the same concepts over and over to different people. - This is why I decided to write this post and answer the questions he had (and some he didn't) about Israel. I will also add some of the sources and references I used at the end of the post. - \--------------------------- \###T\*\*oday I Learned: The Israeli Separation barrier\*\* \*\*Introduction:\*\* \- The term "separation barrier" refers to the security fence Israel has erected along the 1949 armistice "green" line between Israel and the west bank to protect itself from palestinian terror. \- [4] \- The term "separation barrier" is a vague name that could be interpreted in many ways, including the name "wall". It is very important to be aware of this when it comes to any news outlet or social media post about Israel: A lie by omission is a form of propaganda meant to influence your opinion without telling you the entire truth. \- [1] \- The majority of the barrier (about 90%) consists of a multi-layered fence, with a narrower "smart fence" in high-risk areas. - [5] \- The barrier is part of a system which includes a ditch, pyramidal anti-climb iron obstacles, a second mesh fence, patrol roads and an electronic monitoring system. - [5] \- In high-risk areas, a 9m high concrete wall has been erected instead, which also serves as a bulletproof protection barrier to prevent sniping and Stone-throwing attacks. - [5] \- The Israeli supreme court deemed the wall legal in 2004, but ordered the Israeli government to alter the structure of the wall in certain locations. - [5] \- The barrier was built because of the large increase in number of terrorist attacks, meaning suicide bombings and shootings, going into Israel from the west bank. - [9] \- One of the main reasons the barrier is built is to physically separate Israelis from terror attacks. - [9] \- The barrier was built for the same reasons every country has borders, to keep the citizens safe from harm and stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs. - [9] \- The barrier is not an apartheid wall, but rather a physical barrier to stop suicide bombers and stonethrowers from entering Israel. - [9] \- In 2000, there were 26 attacks in Israel, in 2002 there were 54 attacks in Israel, and in 2003 (the year the barrier was erected) there were 25 attacks, and in 2004 there were only 13 attacks in Israel, showing that the barrier is effective. - [9] \- The barrier is not built on Israeli land, but rather on the 1949 armistice agreemen "green line" which is the border between Israel and the west bank. - [9] \- The barrier has allowed Israel to stop the flow of palestinian illegals into Israel, and has also allowed the palestinian authority to control and protect its own borders. - [9] \- In many places, the barrier has saved lives by blocking Molotov cocktails and rocks. - [7] \- If the barrier is really an obstacle for the palestinians, they could have peacefully protested it at any point in time.
