My husband said something as a joke but the more I think about it the more I wonder if it’s actually true. We’re not who we think we are as individuals

This one time my husband said it kind of as a joke, but he said that we’re like characters in a video game. Like the storyline already exists, so no matter what we do it’s going to be that way. I thought it was funny but the more that I thought about it the more I wonder if it’s true and how far it goes if it is. For example it would mean that we’re not who we think we are as individuals, we don’t have the personalities that we think we have. We’re just characters playing these personalities that are meant to guide us to do certain things in the storyline.
