Why do the "traditional Republican" and "traditional Democrat" still exist?

I'm just confused people that hold these beliefs still exist, guess I just haven't seen enough older people with these beliefs, but just don't get it. Why would you hold these beliefs anymore in this day and age after seeing how things have played out?
