Hello, I’m a Canadian

Hello, I’m a Canadian, and I’ve never been here before. I’m here because I want to ask American gun owners a question. I’ve been following Reddit in preparation for a paper, and I’m genuinely curious. On r/gunpolitics, we see a lot of discussion about the "constitution" that I find confusing. I'm doing a paper on gun control laws around the world, and I'm wondering why people would willingly do that to their bodies, why they put so much emphasis on these "rights" that I don't really understand in the first place.

The Canadian government doesn’t completely ban guns (although I’m not sure how much longer that’ll be the case). Legally, you can own certain types of guns (like shotguns and rifles) but the government has something called the "red flag law". A law that allows them to strip people of their guns if they appear to be unstable.

I guess my question is, is there a reason you wouldn’t want that? Because it seems to me like the best of both worlds. You can still have your guns, but the government would have the power to take dangerous people’s guns away from them, to avoid things like mass shootings. I’m genuinely curious as to why that wouldn’t interest you.

I can’t help but wonder why you would want unstable people to be able to so easily access such dangerous things. To me, that’s like handing a child matches. It’s just common sense. Anyways, I’d really appreciate any of your thoughts on this. I’m working on a paper for school and I’m genuinely trying to learn more. Thank you all very much!

P.S. I’d like to apologize if I’ve posted this in the wrong area, I’m not sure how different the rules of the subreddits are. Also, please excuse any grammatical errors. I'm only 19.

EDIT: I'm not trying to make anyone angry, we're all human beings and I understand that not everyone has the same opinions as the people that have commented. I just wanted to ask questions that I had. Thank you for your answers.

EDIT #2: I've never seen the show the Boys, but I have other commitments I have to attend to. I also don't know much about your government, I'm just a college student. I'm not trying topic your country or commit any kind of coup. Also, I just wanted to try to be respectful.

EDIT #3: I’ve never even seen the show The Boys, I’m just trying to finish my paper. I have to research the laws in several countries concerning guns, I'm not trying to start a war.

EDIT #4: I'm not a bot. I don't know how I can prove it. I'm not trying to destroy your country. I don't have any ulterior motive, I just want to finish my paper like I have to for all my classes.

EDIT #5: In Canada, you don't need an ID to vote. I'm not trying to get your personal information by asking you questions. I'm just a student that wants to finish my paper that's due in a few weeks. I'm not a spy. I want to be a school teacher when I grow up, not to ruin your country. I'm just a college student. I don't want to start a war. I'm not trying to take your guns away. I just want to understand your point of view. That's all. Please stop calling me a "commie" like I’m some kind of evil person. It’s not my intention to be offensive or hurtful.

EDIT #6: I don’t think that the government should be too involved in people’s personal affairs, but in terms of guns, I personally believe it should be a collective right, not an individual right. But, I don’t live in America, so it’s not my decision, and I understand that. I’m just doing my research. Thank you all for your answers. Have a nice day.
