This is a long post, and it’s not possible to give the full story of how my relationship with him went from good to bad, so I’m going to just list a few of the weird/crazy/invasive things he did to me that I didn’t realize were red flags at the time. If you do realize they are red flags, imagine how I felt when I was a teenager and didn’t know any better.

Some background: his name is Jake. He is eight years older than me and was 20 when we got together when I was 12. We had a whirlwind romance, getting engaged after about two years of dating. We dated for five years before I broke up with him.

But there were some things I noticed along the way.

-He would always tell me what to wear. It got to the point where he could see me in an outfit and immediately tell me if it was “Jake-approved” or not. It was like he had some sixth sense for if I looked good or not, and he always told me when I looked good in something. It was the first thing he commented on when he saw me, always. (Ex. “Wow, you look beautiful. You always look good when you wear your hair down. It really makes you look hot.”) He told me I was pretty sometimes, but never when he didn’t comment on my outfit. If I didn’t look good according to him, he would say nothing. Once I confronted him about it and he said “Of course you’re pretty! You’re just not wearing your best outfit in that picture!”

-He would ask me invasive questions constantly. He was obsessed with my past relationships, in particular. He would always ask me about my exes and what I did with them, how good they were in bed, how big their dicks were, etc. He would always ask me about sex in general, too. How good I was in bed, if he was better than my previous partners, why I liked certain things and not others. He was also obsessed with knowing everything about what I was doing at any given time and where I was going. If I didn’t tell him, I was cheating on him. I once asked if he wanted to be with me more than he wanted to trust me. I should have broken up with him then and there. “Of course, you dumb bitch,” he said. “Now tell me what you’re doing right now.”

-He would hide my phone and my keys so I couldn’t leave him. One time he took my phone and keys when we were at the beach and hid them in the car, then I realized they were gone and I didn’t know where they were. I went up to the car to look for them and I found them in the center console. There was a note next to it that said “You don’t need this right now. You’re spending time with me, and that’s all you should be thinking about. Love you.”

-He would sometimes get very quiet and cold. He never said anything to me, just stared right through me as if he wasn’t even looking at me. It was incredibly unnerving and I felt like I was in danger.

-He once followed me on social media after we broke up. I blocked him and he sent me a message demanding I unblock him so he could see my profiles. I said no and he threatened to show my family nude pictures I had sent him during the relationship. I called the police and they said there was nothing they could do, because he didn’t explicitly threaten to show them on social media. I blocked him on everything and hoped that I wouldn’t run into him again.

A few months ago, I would be in stores and see this woman around my age. She had short red hair and looked very familiar, and I realized she looked familiar because she looked a lot like me. Once I realized this, I started paying attention to what she looked like, and she looked a lot like me. She had short red hair, the same blue eyes, was about the same height and build. Jake was never attracted to redheads, but the first thing he commented on when he saw me was my hair. She was shopping for groceries when I saw her, and I noticed she was buying things that were Jake’s favorites. His favorite snack, his favorite alcohol, his favorite foods, all in one shopping cart. I immediately realized Jake must be seeing her, because how could it be a coincidence? The woman who looks almost like me was buying his favorite foods.

I saw her shopping again not long after that, and she was driving a car that wasn’t familiar to me. It was a black car, but I didn’t see what make it was. She was wearing a wedding ring on her left hand, and it was shaped exactly like the ring Jake gave me when he proposed. I realized this must be Jake’s new girlfriend, because who else would propose with that ring?

I started seeing her in stores more often. She would always smile and say hi, and I would be friendly back to her but I had to admit I was a little jealous. I was jealous that Jake was still using my hair and eye color as a preference for the women he dated. I was jealous that he had proposed to her, and apparently they were already married. I was jealous that Jake had basically cloned me in his new wife. I felt like I had failed him somehow.

Then I started seeing Jake himself. I saw him standing outside the grocery store, standing next to a black car. I realized this must be the car his new wife was driving, and it was a really nice car. Jake was standing by the car, smoking a cigarette and looking at the ground. When he saw me, he looked up at me and just stared for a while, then he grinned at me. I smiled back at him and he walked towards me. I waited for him and we talked. He told me he missed me, that he was sorry for how our relationship ended and that he still thought about me sometimes. He told me his new wife had been cheating on him and that he was still in love with me. I told him I was flattered, but I was also in a happy relationship now and I couldn’t be with him. He asked me who it was and I told him the name of my boyfriend. He asked where I was going after I left the store and I told him I was going to the park, as I did every week. When he walked away from me, I felt incredibly nervous.

Not long after that, I started noticing more things about his new wife. First of all, she was never wearing the ring anymore. She was always text on her phone and looked absolutely miserable whenever I saw her. She never smiled at me anymore. I started noticing that she would always be shopping alone at the same time every week. It wasn’t until then that I realized Jake always saw me at the same time every week, always at the park. I started to be nervous every time I went to the park. I was afraid he was going to show up and do something to me.

One week, I decided to go to the store at a different time. I shopped in the afternoon instead of the morning, and I didn’t see Jake’s wife. But the next morning, I went to the park like normal. As I was walking to the parking lot, I noticed a figure standing behind one of the trees. I couldn’t see their face, but they were hiding behind a tree, peeking out every few seconds. I felt a cold sweat break out on my forehead as I realized it must be Jake.

I immediately called the police and told them I was scared. They told me to call them if I could confirm that it was Jake, but they couldn’t do anything until then. I walked up to the tree where the person was hiding, my heart pounding in my chest. When I got to the tree, I saw it was Jake, and he was grinning at me. I asked him what he was doing and he told me he was waiting for me. He said he had been waiting for me all morning, because he knew I came to the park every week at this time. I asked him to leave and he said no. I asked him if he had done something to his wife, and he said she was “taking care of herself.” I didn’t really know what to say to that, because it sounded like he was talking in code. I told him I was going to call the police and he just laughed.

I called the police and they came right away. They arrested Jake and read him his rights. I didn’t realize what he was being arrested for until they told me. Apparently, his wife had been missing for months. She was reported missing when she didn’t show up to work one day, and they found her phone on the side of the road, smashed into pieces. Jake told them she was on a business trip in another state, but they found out that she didn’t make travel arrangements anywhere and didn’t have any upcoming business trips. They found blood in their house, and Jake said he had cut his hand and that was why there was blood. They did DNA testing on the blood and it came back as his wife’s DNA. They arrested him for murder, even though they didn’t have a body.

I later found out that his wife’s body was found in their backyard. It was in a shallow grave and it was buried with rocks on top. The police said they had done tests and it was obvious she had died by blunt force trauma to the head. They found some sort of heavy stone buried in the grave, and they assumed that was what had killed her.

Things have been quiet since Jake was arrested. I am incredibly glad I got out when I did. I am definitely going to be at
