Always ask the cop why they pulled you over before you do anything else.

I'm a cop and the reason you get pulled over is written down as soon as you're pulled over. If you start by asking why you're pulled over I have nowhere to write that down and the interaction gets weird. Just gives me a reason to be an ass to you. It also makes me question if this is your first time ever being pulled over.

Edit - Grammar. Seriously people, I am a cop, not an English major. I didn't know there were so many grammatical errors. I'll try harder in the future.

Edit 2 - Car search. I've never searched a car without consent, and I don't do consent searches for the reason some mentioned. To me at least, searching a car takes to long and takes me out of the area. There are circumstances that require a car search, but most of the time it's not worth my time.

Edit 3 - I'll also point out, if I'm being an ass for no reason, ask for a supervisor. However, if I give you a reason, shutting your mouth and taking the ticket usually ends things faster. And please, for your own sake, don't try to debate why you got a ticket. You're going to lose.

Edit 4 - a note about ticket revenue - cop's don't get a cut of ticket money, and I think it's illegal for that to happen. What does happen, is a city hires more cops and gets more cars because they know they have a certain income from tickets. You're not paying my salary with a ticket, you're paying for the police car I'm driving. If you live in a small town, our budget might consist of 20-30% in ticket money (They could also have a special tax for the police department). Big cities have a much smaller reliance on ticket money.
