CMV: It is absolutely reasonable to charge full price for take out food, even though the overhead costs are less.

If I order a pizza from my local spot, the price of the pizza is the same regardless if I eat it in the restaurant or take it home. This is absolutely fair, and I expect to pay the same price. The food costs are the same, the labor costs are the same (maybe more for take out because you have to pack everything and bring it out), so why do people think they should get a discount just because they are taking it home?

Edit: Thanks for the awards everyone. I love this sub because there are so many different view points from all over the world that you can learn a new way of thinking about a topic.

I made this post in 2020 and still stand by it. I do not think take out food should be cheaper. I think it’s ridiculous that restaurants discount take out orders or have a lower price for them just because there is no table and tip. I don’t think “well you can’t use our bathroom or take up our table” is adequate reasoning to lower the price.

If I order 5 cheese burgers from McDonald’s, it will be $X, regardless of if I eat it in the restaurant or take it home. This is how it should be everywhere.
