Hi. I'm an Australian, and I hate our gun laws. I want to get my permit in the next few years, and I want to know more about your favourite guns.

I'm Australian, and I'm not necessarily pro-gun, but I'm no gun-hater either. I do hate our gun laws, and I want to own a gun sometime in the next few years. I've done a firearms training course and I'm trying to get as much info about all sorts of guns as I can.

I'm not really concerned about buying a gun for "self defence", I want a gun for sport shooting one day. I am allowed to purchase guns for sport shooting, but not for self defence. I'm not sure why self defence is a bad reason to buy a gun, but I'll let that be known so I'm not accused of being a wanker who wants to shoot someone if they break into my house.

Anyway, before I do go out and buy anything, I just want to get some info about different types of guns, what makes them good, and what makes them bad. I don't want to do any damage to myself, and I don't want to do any damage to anyone else (excluding targets, clays, etc.). In particular, I'd be keen on hearing about different types of guns, their calibre, their uses, and what makes them so good (or bad).

I'm also keen on hearing about how you'd recommend getting into shooting as a sport. What should I do first, and what are some dos and dont's that you'd recommend?

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the help. We don't have the same culture of sport shooting in Australia, but I really enjoy it, and I want to make a hobby one day out of sport shooting, and to be able to go out and shoot whenever I want. I don't really want to go hunting, I just want to shoot targets.
