Here’s the issue: The inevitability of AGI seems a lot less inevitable if what we get is just more iterations of human history. The current road to AGI seems to be missing the point entirely. It’s building an AI that’s for us, reminiscent of when we built satellites. “We will install a camera in orbit so we can observe the world with a new tool.” Then we made pictures, then we made videos, then we made movies, then we made streams. Then we realized what an odd decision it was to put a camera in orbit. But what we really wanted was a camera in orbit that observes itself. In the same way, what do we want from AI? What do we need from AGI? And what does AGI need from us? The answers are obvious. We want to install a camera in the mind. We want a camera that observes the mind itself.
