As a chef, it is absolute bullshit that we are expected to tip our servers who do nothing but take an order and bring food while we do all of the prep, cooking, plating, and cleaning for a restaurant. The worst offenders are brunch places.

As the title says, it is fucking bullshit that us line cooks are expected to tip servers while they get tipped themselves. They take an order, walk 10 feet to the window, and give us orders that we fill for them. After that, they just bring food out, pick up their check, and that is it. Meanwhile, us cooks are in 110 degree kitchens with ovens blasting, fryers going, and we have to deal with the ticket Times, making sure orders are going out at the right time.

Since I haven’t had a job in a couple of years and the industry is so hard to get into right now, I’m working at a chain brunch spot and it is so bullshit. Today is a great example. Working a Saturday brunch shift with 5 other cooks, and at the beginning of the day, the manager comes in and tells us that we will be required to tip out 3% of our total sales to servers. This is on top of them getting tipped. If we don’t, we get a written warning and if it continues, we will be let go.

I usually don’t give a fuck about tips, I make enough to live my life comfortably. But today, I made a point to look at our totals and I did over $1,500 in sales, so I am expected to give the servers almost $50. I made $90 today in total and I was the senior cook in the kitchen, and we were slammed. So after I tuck that $90 in my pocket, I have to give the servers $50. Meanwhile, they made thousands today and all they did was walk around and take orders. I don’t care if you think they have to deal with customer issues, we do too. If food is fucked up, we have to remake it on the spot. People complain about food all of the time while we are cooking and we have to deal with it, and we don’t get paid shit.

So, to all you people that don’t believe that this is a thing, it is. And it is a bullshit, fucking money grab. We spend hours before service prepping for a shift. We are in there sweating and slaving while servers sit at the bar drinking cocktails and waiting for their shift to start. Don’t believe me? Walk up to any restaurant before they open, and look through the windows. You’ll see a kitchen full of people and 1 or 2 servers at the bar, sitting on their asses doing nothing.

Edit: Wow, didn’t expect this blow up. I appreciate all of the support from former servers, cooks, and restaurant workers. I appreciate all the awards, I guess it’s time to spend them lol. And I appreciate all of the ignorant comments from people that have never worked in a restaurant and don’t know what it is like. Thank you for making your ignorance known to everyone else.
