I think it's fair to say there's a lot of discussion on this sub about what people have to say about Trump. Trump certainly isn't the most polished politician ever, but is he really the most disrespected presidential candidate in history? Is he really worse than Andrew Jackson, who was known for dueling and killing people, or Theodore Roosevelt, who once pulled out a pistol and waved it around on stage while giving a speech?

I think this is an important discussion, because if we treat presidential candidates like shit, then only pieces of shit will run for office. Not to say that presidential candidates should be treated as saints; we should be critical of them. But at the end of the day, if we want to run for office, we should be able to run without people questioning our mental fitness for office.

EDIT: I think this thread might be moving towards a very typical US two-party system discussion "my candidate is better than your candidate." I think we should focus more on the question of "what behaviour is acceptable from us towards politicians?"

EDIT: I think I might have been unclear with what I meant with "disrespected". When I refer to disrespect of politicians, I refer specifically to comments on their intelligence or whether they are "mentally fit" to run for office. I don't think there's been a president in my lifetime who has been attacked so often about whether they are "stable" or "sane" enough to run for office.
