CMV: The next big social movement in North America will be anti-immigration.

I say this as an immigrant to Canada (from the US). I understand that there are many opinions on this topic, so I will just put forward my evidence. I'm happy to consider your arguments.

My reasoning for this is as follows:

-Canada's current Liberal government has called for an increase in immigration levels to 500,000 a year. The history of their actions has been on the high end of their promises, so I expect there to be at least 500,000 immigrants coming in per year.

-While Canada is a large country, we are sparsely populated on the prairies, have a hostile climate, and much of the land is difficult to inhabit. The Okanogan valley has been the only place that is warm enough for people to live in comfort. The rest of the country is cold and hostile, which has historically been a barrier to immigration. This is changing due to climate change and better infrastructure. The people moving here now are mostly settling in the big cities, which are becoming more crowded.

-The environmental movement, which is a growing voice, claims that Canada is especially vulnerable to climate change. Drastic measures are being taken, including restricting flying, gas usage, buying of large appliances, and recommendations for switching to plant-based diets. People from South Asia are used to eating meat heavy diets, and are not likely to switch to plant-based diets. People moving here from Asia are also used to being a large population in small spaces and might see it as normal, whereas native-born Canadians are becoming more concerned about their small living spaces.

-In Canada, there have been rising tensions in the last year especially between anti-immigration sentiment and pro-immigration sentiment. Pro-immigration people have historically been the louder voice, but with the housing and homeless crisis, people are starting to see immigrants as competition rather than welcome guests. There was a recent post on Reddit Canada where people were sharing their stories of immigrants behaving in unacceptable ways. There has been a backlash against this post, but I think we can all agree that there are certain behaviors that are just not alright.

-There is actual data that shows immigrants will eventually replace native-born Canadians as immigrants reproduce at a higher rate than native-born Canadians. There is plenty of evidence in both the US and Canada of this. It's not hard to find this information.

-Finally, a lot of immigrants do not assimilate. Many new immigrants to Canada are coming from South Asia and other places that are culturally very different from Canada. The idea of Canada as a mosaic has been celebrated by our current government, but it is causing tension.

Historically, when the native-born see immigrants as a threat, or when immigrants do not assimilate and the native-born see immigrants as odd, there is a social backlash. While I do not think immigrants are inherently bad, I think that Canada's current policy is unsustainable and will inevitably lead to a backlash.

The question then becomes whether or not I am right. If I am wrong, then immigrants will continue to be seen as a net positive to Canada, and anti-immigration sentiment will not become a major social movement.

But if I am right, then the anti-immigration people will be seen as "I told you so" types, and there will be a movement to stop or at least slow the rate of immigration. It's early days, but I think especially with the housing and homeless crisis, we're seeing a groundswell of resentment against immigrants.

Note: Please stay on topic and keep it civil. I might not answer every post, but I will try to address every view.

Edit: Thank you for so many thoughtful responses. I will continue to update throughout the day, but I think I might not get to every response. I appreciate all of the thoughtful arguments and am considering your responses.
