"Let me check the internet for tips" is far worse than "suck it up buttercup"

One is an adult giving a kid advice that is cliche, the other is an adult giving a kid advice that is outright unhelpful.

For the last few years, it seems like kids asking their parents for help with something immediately being directed to "google it" or "look it up on reddit" has become more common. I find this incredibly problematic, as someone who has been in the position of the kid asking the question, and someone who has also been in the position of the parent giving the advice.

Anyone can go on the internet, but not everyone has the skills to properly evaluate sources, or differentiate between good and bad advice. Reddit is notorious for people giving terrible advice, yet I see people direct their kids here to find answers to their questions.

Furthermore, if a kid comes to an adult for advice, they're not looking for advice from thousands of strangers, they're looking for advice and reassurance from someone they trust. Telling a kid to go check the internet is abdicating the responsibility of parenthood.
