My wife killed herself but saved my life

[This is my wife’s story, I’ve been told to say that - you’ll see why. I’m really sorry to everyone who will have to read this and I realise my wife isn’t the most considerate person.]

My wife killed herself about a week ago, I’ve been in a daze since then and not been able to do much apart from being comforted by friends. The fact she was able to kill herself is something I’m still getting used to as my wife was never really into any exercise and had never been able to do anything that required a lot of effort.

The police found her after my neighbours called them, apparently she fell onto them and they heard the thud. She had been dead for over a day by the time they found her. I was out of the country at the time, visiting my family.

My wife and I had talked about her getting some sort of exercise and I was happy when she told me she had found something she wanted to do. The day before I left she told me how she was going to learn parkour. She mentioned how cool it had made people look in various videos and that she wanted to learn how to do cool flips and other things. I didn’t mind, my family lived in a mountainous area so the exercise would do her good. The fact she was going to learn parkour didn’t really bother me, I was more annoyed by the fact she was throwing money at the problem. She had already paid for a personal trainer and a place to stay in the town closest to my family. That was my main concern, my wife had never been anywhere close to where my family lived and she had never really been on her own. The thought of her being away from me for almost a month with no family was hard for me to swallow.

I wasn’t really as bothered about the parkour but I had to mention something if I didn’t want her thinking I was being controlling. I had to tell her she couldn’t do parkour for some reason, I think she would have taken it as an insult if I told her I wasn’t worried about her doing parkour. I decided to tell her she was going to injure herself, and she was.

“I know you’re not going to be doing parkour for a while, we just need to book you a place to stay and somewhere for you to train.” Was her reply.

I didn’t really have much of a reply for that, she had already organised a place to stay and somewhere to train. I just hoped she wouldn’t hurt herself, and she didn’t.

The day I left was hellish, I was in a daze for most of it and she was packed and ready hours before our taxi came. I just lay on the couch in silence while she sat next to me. I didn’t even register her hugging me until she squeezed me. I must have looked like a zombie as our taxi driver seemed really concerned when I got in the car.

I was fine after that, the flight wasn’t too bad and my family were waiting to pick me up. After telling them what had happened they were really nice and supportive and I was able to forget my wife for a while. That was until I got to my grandparents house.

My wife had spent the whole day before I left packing, she was gone by the time I woke up. She had left a note and a bunch of presents for me to take to my grandparents. The presents were all the same, a small bottle of alcohol with a note inside. The note didn’t say much, just my wife’s name, her age, occupation and how much she loved me. I had no idea why she was doing this but I assumed it was because she wanted something to remember her by if anything happened to her. I gave the presents to my grandparents and told them what my wife said when she gave them to me. My grandparents were really happy but my grandpa, despite being in poor health, looked worried.

My grandpa is a traditionalist, he believes that when someone dies you should burn their remains and drink the ashes mixed with alcohol to remember them. Even though I was raised in a modern country this was something I was told from a young age and always believed in. When I saw my grandpa’s reaction I knew exactly what he was thinking and I had to agree. My wife was beautiful and the thought of her remains being buried or cremated just seemed wrong. At the time I didn’t realise how soon my grandpa and I would have to drink her remains.

My wife and I talked a few times while I was with my grandparents, she told me about how great the place she was training in was and how nice her trainer was. She didn’t spend much time training, she had sprained her ankle on the first day and spent the rest of her time recovering. She said she was going to go back to training soon but I told her not to rush it. The day before she died I asked her how she felt, she told me she was fine now and had made friends with some of the people at her training centre. She also told me she had gone to a bar with them the night before and got really drunk. I told her to be careful, she just said she already was and not to worry.

I didn’t hear anything from her the next day. I tried to call her a few times but she never answered. It was around lunchtime that her trainer called me. He told me my wife was dead and asked if I could come and identify the body. I still don’t know how she died but from what he told me I think it must have been really quick. He told me she was alone when she died and that her body was found a few hours later. He also told me where she was and that a car would come and pick me up soon. I thanked him and waited.

It took a few hours for the car to come and get me, I just sat in silence the whole time, too heartbroken to do anything. My family tried to comfort me but I just ignored them. I didn’t really register anything when the car came, my grandpa telling me to get up was what made me notice it. The guy driving was a young man, he looked really out of place in his fancy suit and sunglasses. He gestured to the backseat and I got in, my grandpa also joining me. The driver didn’t say much, he just told me where he was taking me then drove off.

I still didn’t really register anything during the drive, I just stared into space and ignored what my grandpa was saying. He was telling me how to be strong for my wife and how he was going to send someone to pick up my things. I wasn’t really listening though. It wasn’t until we arrived at the training centre that I looked around.

The training centre was nothing more than an abandoned building, it didn’t really look like it was used for parkour training. A lot of the walls were crumbling and there was no glass in the windows. It looked more like it was used by homeless people than a group of athletes. My grandpa seemingly agreed as he made a negative comment about it as we were getting out of the car.

The trainer my wife was using was waiting for us, he didn’t look happy, I assumed it was because my wife was the first person he had lost.

“Why the fuck am I here?” My grandpa asked him almost as soon as we were out of the car.

“Your grandson’s wife is dead and you need to identify her body.” Was the trainer’s reply.

“How did she die?” My grandpa asked him, seemingly annoyed.

“I don’t know, but I think she was killed by a demon. You told your grandson to pay me to teach your daughter in law how to kill demons, and-”

“I told him to pay you to teach her parkour, why the fuck would I tell him to pay you to teach her how to kill demons? That’s fucking stupid.” My grandpa interrupted.

The trainer looked uncomfortable at this. “Parkour?! Your daughter in law asked me to teach her how to kill demons!” He exclaimed.

“Well she was being stupid then, you don’t kill demons. You just avoid them.” My grandpa said.

The trainer seemed to be in shock, he was just silently staring at my grandpa. I was also surprised at what my grandpa said, I had assumed he was joking about demons until then. My grandpa grabbed my arm and pulled me towards the trainer.

“You’re going to take me to where my son’s wife in law died. I want to see her body so I can tell the funeral director how he should burn her.” He said.

The trainer lead us into the building, I looked around and saw a few people doing various things around the building. It was then I noticed they were all armed, each of them had something you could use as a weapon. I pointed this out to my grandpa.

“Yes, if a demon were to get in here they would be able to protect themselves, especially with the training you paid for.” The trainer replied.

My grandpa looked at him like he was crazy. “I didn’t pay you to train anyone! You were supposed to teach my son’s wife in law parkour!”

The trainer just shook his head and kept walking. I followed him, still in a daze. As we walked he pointed out various things, the weapons they used to defend themselves, the walls and other barriers they had erected to stop demons and where they got their food and other essential resources. My grandpa didn’t seem to care, he just grunted when the trainer pointed things out to him.

It took a while but we eventually reached the part of the building where my wife’s body had been found. It was in a narrow corridor, it looked like it had been used by the people training here. I recognised some of the weapons
