Hi, I'm 15 year old and my sister, Candice, is 9. We lost our parents last year. It was just the two of us now, and I did my best to care for her. Life without parents seemed lonely, but we got through it together.

Candice and I lived in a cozy little house our parents left for us. Each of us had our own room, and Candice's room was the coziest. However, Candice had a very strange habit.

Each night, before going to bed, she would look under her bed and say the following words: "If there's a monster under here, I'm not afraid of you. They took my mom, my dad, my friends and family who died. If you want to take me too, you'll have to take yourself because I'll kill myself before you can pry me away. My teeth are sharper than yours."

I never interrupted her, it was her ritual and kept her sane. Once, Candice let me in on her little secret. "By the way, did you know there actually is a monster under there?" I just laughed and she did too, but I noticed something one night.

When Candice was finished with her ritual, she tucked herself into bed and I decided to do something. I snuck down to the floor on her side of the bed, stuck my head under it, and yelled at the top of my lungs, "Boo!"

There was a brief, terrified silence, and then Candice screeched with surprise and terror. "AHHHHH! GET AWAY! YOU WON'T TAKE ME!" She screamed at the top of her lungs, kicking and punching wildly.

I pulled my head out from under the bed and stood up to see she was in a wild frenzy. I just stood there, frozen in shock. "By the way, did you know there actually *is* a monster under there?" She said.

It didn't take me long to get things together. "Candice, stop! It's me, your brother!" I said, grabbing her wrists. "Why are you hitting me?"

Candice froze, trembling. "W-what? I'm not hitting you, I'm hitting the monster!" She cried. I quickly realized she hadn't seen me when I stuck my head under the bed.

"What monster?" I said, trying to get her to snap out of it.

"The one under my bed! It's right there, you can't see it?" She asked, pointing to the ground next to the bed. I looked and of course I couldn't see anything.

"You can't see it?" She asked, her eyes wide.

"I can't see anything. Cands, there's no monster." I said.

"I could have **sworn** I saw a pair of teeth." She said.

"I'm telling you, there's no one there." I said.

"Fine, if you can't see it, then just watch while I kick the shit out of this stupid fucking monster." She said. Candice was still trembling in anger, but she slowly calmed down, still staring at the ground.

"You know, I've been watching you kick at the floor for five minutes now and I haven't seen you kick anything yet." I said.

"I know, because there's a fucking monster under my bed!" She shrieked. I sighed and got on my hands and knees. I stuck my head under the bed and Candice shrieked again. "NOOOOO! DON'T GO UNDER THERE! IT'LL EAT YOU!"

I ignored her, looking around. The room was messy, with empty chip bags and wrappers and other things scattered beneath the bed. As I peered into the darkness, I noticed one of the bags seemed out of place.

Curious, I crawled further under the bed and reached for the bag. It was empty except for a folded paper inside of it. I reached in and unfolded it, revealing a handwritten note.

"I'm not a monster. I'm just a survivor." It read. I noticed more of the notes had been placed around me, stuck to the underside of the bed. Some of them had sentences written on them, like, "You're gonna starve yourself to death if you keep eating all of your snacks down here."

I knew this wasn't Candice, because she was lazy and wouldn't write all this. I looked up to Candice, who was looking at me in horror. "What are you doing?" She asked.

"I thought you were being ridiculous, but there actually is something down here." I said.

"What do you mean?" She said.

"I found a note, and I think there might be someone down here." I said.

"Someone?" Candice asked. "There's monsters! My mom said so!"

"Your mom was just joking, Cands." I said.

"She wasn't. I saw them! My mom took me to the zoo and showed me the monkeys, and she told me: 'Monkeys live in the trees, and the monsters live under your bed. You have to be careful not to wake them up, or you'll disappear.'" Candice said.

"That makes no sense. Where did she get that from?" I asked, stunned.

"Didn't you hear me? She showed me the monsters! And you're right, it doesn't make sense." Candice said.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because I saw hundreds of monkeys at the zoo, but she only showed me one monster under one bed!" She said.

I nodded. "That makes sense. There really is only one monster down here." I said.

"You see? I told you. How do you not know about the monsters?" She asked.

"You didn't know there actually was a monster until now! Besides, I don't think there are monsters under every bed." I said.

"Are you sure? Mom said so." She said.

"Well, she was wrong, or else I'd be gone now. Besides, what have I done to the monsters if they don't bother me?" I asked.

"I don't know. What did I do?" Candice asked.

"Nothing. You just talk to it every night." I said.

"I'm just trying to be nice!" She said, tears beginning to form in her eyes.

"Don't cry, Cands. There's nothing to be afraid of, It's just some dumb notes. Look at this one, for example." I said, showing her the note.

"What does it say?" She asked.

"'I'm not a monster. I'm just a survivor.'" I read. Candice's tears immediately stopped, replaced by a wide grin.

"You mean the monsters are friendly?" She asked.

"It seems so," I said. "I'll talk to It while you go to sleep, okay?" I asked. Candice nodded and went to bed. I got back under the bed and looked around for more notes.

By the light of my phone, I was able to read all the sentences. "I'm not a monster. I'm just a survivor." "You're gonna starve yourself to death if you keep eating all of your snacks down here."

"Why do you talk to me every night and threaten to kill yourself?" "What do you mean I took your parents? I'm not that kind of monster." "I'm just trying to survive."

"What do you mean I took your friends and family? I've been down here for eleven years." "Please don't kill yourself. I've never seen you. I don't want to find your body."

"I like it when you talk to me. You're not like the others who never get out of bed." "I've never eaten a human. You have nothing to be afraid of."

"I've been living under here for eleven years. I just want someone to talk to." "You're a mean little girl. I'm just trying to live and you want to kill yourself?"

"I'm not a monster. I'm just a survivor." "You're gonna starve yourself to death if you keep eating all of your snacks down here."

"Why do you talk to me every night and threaten to kill yourself?" "What do you mean I took your parents? I'm not that kind of monster."

"I'm just trying to survive." "What do you mean I took your friends and family? I've been down here for eleven years."

"Please don't kill yourself. I've never seen you. I don't want to find your body." "I like it when you talk to me. You're not like the others who never get out of bed."

"I've never eaten a human. You have nothing to be afraid of." "What do you mean I took your parents? I'm not that kind of monster."

"I'm just trying to survive." It went on like that for what felt like hours. I couldn't get out of the endless loop.

Finally, I got the brightest idea I'd had. I dug the last note out of the bag and wrote something on the inside of the paper.

"I'm looking for you. Meet me halfway." I stuck it back in the bag and went to sleep, still under the bed. The next morning, I decided to look again.

I decided to go to the halfway point, which I decided was where Cand
