Finger in the trigger guard?

So I was at the range and noticed the person next to me had his finger in the trigger guard even when not actively shooting. I politely informed him of the safety hazard this could cause. He responded by saying that "guns don't kill people, people kill people." I'm just wondering, am I in the wrong for speaking up or was this person in the wrong for not paying attention to basic gun safety?

Edit: Holy cow this blew up. Thank you all for the awards and the informative comments. I really appreciate it.
