A 41-year-old Japanese man has built a small granny flat on his roof for his 75-year-old mom after she kept trying to kill him.

Kenta Inomata thought he was doing the right thing by letting his mom, Asayo, live with him. But the four-bedroom house was too big for him and he had trouble getting a girlfriend because his mom kept scaring the women away.

"We managed to get through the serial killer phase, and she started running for the hills every time I mentioned moving out," he said.

One night, Asayo waited until midnight before trying to strangle Inomata with a rope, telling him when police turned up "Oh, I was just *testing the knots*".

The final straw came when Inomata was forced to defend his food.

"I returned home from a grocery run to find she had eaten all my food. I had nowhere to escape to. So I thought 'why not build a granny flat on the roof'?" he said.

She moved into the granny flat in 2020, where she had her own kitchen, bedroom and balcony, but no television or Wi-Fi.

"The day she moved out was the day the granny flat was ready. I don't speak to her but I check on her every few days to see if she's still alive," he said.

Inomata said the granny flat was designed to be extremely safe, adding that it was "impossible to die in that sort of *environment*".

"As a man, you don't need a woman in your life. Just build her a house on your roof and claim the moral high ground when she complains about it. She'll never ask you to buy her flowers or chocolates again."

"But what if she brings a man into her life?"

"Then I'll just build her another house on my roof."

Asayo has since moved out and Inomata said he was considering tearing down the granny flat and selling the property to a wealthy chinese couple.

"I need to make a profit from this house, either by tearing it down and selling it or by making Asayo the main character in a film. Either way, I win.

"From a practical standpoint, it makes no sense to have a granny flat on the roof. But from an emotional standpoint, it was the right choice. The moral of the story is that you should never let your mother live with you if she tries to kill you."

Inomata claimed he has since moved on and was dating an architect who had no problem with the granny flat.

"She was a great woman."

Inomata has gained a global following for his stories about his mom and his life in Japan. He has written a book about his experiences, which has been translated into five languages.
