people are so used to technology not changing anything they seem to have forgotten what the term revolution meant in the past.

with everything from electricity to cars to computers, there have large time gaps between when they were first invented and when they really changed anything. people have become so used to technology advancing at that slow pace that they seem to have become disconnected from reality and what a sudden change in the world really looks like.

when the steam engine was first invented it didnt immediately change the world, it didnt change the world when the first locomotive was invented either, it wasnt until the first railway was built that the term revolution started being used. the term revolution is all about the point at which reality is changed forever, when things never go back to how they used to be. humans used to get food by gathering algae from streams and digging up roots, they had to compete with other animals and even had to go without food sometimes, then agriculture came we ended up creating settlers societies and stopped migrating. humans used to only ever live in tents, then they invented mud huts which were cold and damp, then they invented better houses which were used by only a select few, then eventually everyone lived in houses made of brick and concrete and never had to live in a tent again.

when the flushable toilet was invented in 1596 it wasnt until 1000 years later that every house in a first world country had one. when steam power was first invented in 1698 it wasnt until 200 years later that factories stopped using watermills. when we landed on the moon in 1969 we said we were going to put a man on mars next, but that never happened. when we invented the lightbulb in 1879 it wasnt until an entire electrical system was built to support it that we could replace gas lamps. when we invented the car in 1886 it wasnt until we paved the roads and built a system to support them that people stopped using horses. when we invented the first supercomputer in 1936, we were not yet at the point at which it was superior to humans. when we invented the first computer in 1822 (well the first plan for one anyway), we were not yet at the point at which it was superior to humans. when we invented the first telephone it took decades to get a system up and running to support it. when we invented the internet it took decades to get a system up and running to support it. when we invented the first robot dog it wasnt until 30 years later that we got robot dogs that could do tricks. when we invented the first robotic arm it wasnt until a couple decades later that we could use it to serve food. when we invented the first robot vacuum it wasnt until a couple decades later that we had one that didnt get jammed up all the time.

when we first invented the first wind turbines it wasnt until 50 years later that we had one with 3 blades. when we first invented solar panels it wasnt until 50 years later that we had solar panels that were affordable. when we first invented the first nuclear power station it wasnt until decades later that we finally got nuclear fusion.

when we first invented the first jet engine it wasnt until 10 years later that we had commercial airlines using it. when we first invented the first sewing machine it wasnt until 10 years later that it used an electrical motor. when we first invented the first automatic washing machine it wasnt until 10 years later that it used an electrical motor. when we first invented the first microwave it wasnt until 10 years later that it was affordable. when we first invented the first refrigerator it wasnt until 10 years later that it was widely available. when we first invented the first elevator it wasnt until 10 years later that it could stop at any floor. when we first invented the first mobile phone it wasnt until 10 years later that we had the first smartphone. when we first invented the first television it wasnt until a couple decades later that it was widely available. when we first invented the first radio it wasnt until a couple decades later that it was widely available.

there is no such thing as Moore's law, the idea that "computing power doubles every 2 years". The cost of computing power also doubles every 2 years, so there is no real 'progress'. That is why we can have supercomputers that are superior to humans for decades without humans being obsolete yet. Moore's law is just a sales technique, it is only true for the product being sold, not all products. People only see progress because they dont understand that they are being sold a product that is being offset by another product. Progress is an illusion we are not really moving forward. This is why it has taken us 100 years to get to the first human brain sized computer superior to humans, not 80 years or 60 years, 100 years. We dont really know yet if the gemini is superior to humans.
