Tweeting or lurking on Twitter is a waste of time, and the events of the last few months proves it. To get a feel for what's going on on Twitter, you need to remember the following:

- **Twitter is not a reflection of real life.** Take a look at your recent and popular section. Here you'll find a ton of viral posts, trending hashtags, and people talking about the **exact same thing over and over again.**

- **Men aren't represented on Twitter.** According to a 2020 survey, 39% of Twitter users are women and 61% of Twitter users are men. However, women are more likely to discuss issues like marriage, relationships, and pop culture than men. Which leads to the next point:

- **Women control the discussion on Twitter.** According to a 2019 study, 22% of active Twitter users are women between the ages of 24 and 30. These are the people who are responsible for the trends and discussions that go on in a given day. What kinds of things do you think they are tweeting about? Hint: It isn't what the stock market is doing, the best way to cook a steak, or what kind of car they want to buy.

- **Twitter has a massive amount of bots.** In 2021, a study was done to determine how many Twitter accounts were automated. The study concluded that anywhere from 9% to 15% of Twitter accounts are bots. So for example, if a tweet had 100,000 likes but only 10 retweets, you can bet your ass that 90,000 of those likes came from bots. Furthermore, many of these bots are owned by advertising agencies and PR firms. They use these bots to control traffic and manipulate the discussion through sockpuppet accounts and propaganda. Any discussion on Twitter is fake, and is only there to manipulate you.

- **Twitter can't be trusted.** Why should you trust a discussion that is controlled by sockpuppets, bots, and the general shallow nature of Twitter? And why should you put stock into what people are saying on Twitter when you don't even know if it's a person?

- **Twitter is a waste of time.** With all of the same garbage getting posted every day, on top of the fact that there is no real discussion to be had on the platform, there's really no reason to be on Twitter at all. The platform is just a waste of time.

- **Twitter is dying.** Twitter has never been a profitable company, and the platform is bleeding money. They're projected to lose $700m in 2023. The only thing keeping them afloat is their ability to secure loans from investors. This won't last forever. At some point Twitter will have to go through a round of layoffs, and user experience will suffer because of it. They also have to answer to their investors, so only time will tell if Twitter will become another Facebook where you're bombarded with ads and your timeline is designed to keep you on the platform as long as possible.

- **Twitter is not a reflection of real life.** Who cares what people on Twitter think? Who cares what they have to say? Twitter has been called a "microcosm of the internet at large," but at the end of the day it's still the internet. Why should you put stock into Twitter when you don't even know if the person you're talking to is real? There's an entire world out there full of real people with real experiences. These people are infinitely more interesting than any shit you can find on Twitter.

Don't put stock into Twitter. Take Twitter for what it is: a microcosm of the shallow modern world, shills for corporations, people arguing with each other, and just overall dumb and shallow topics of discussion. If you have a Twitter account, delete it. You will not be missed. Your life will not be negatively impacted in any way by deleting your Twitter account. If you don't have a Twitter account but you still lurk on the website, stop. Every time you pull up the Twitter website, you are allowing Twitter to collect data on you and sell it to third-party advertisers. Why the hell should you allow this? And if you feel the need to keep up with Twitter, there's still better ways of doing it. I have no apps installed on my phone. I don't answer phone calls from numbers I don't know. I don't click links that I didn't ask for. I don't allow notifications on my phone. If you have social media apps on your phone, delete them. If you're on social media, delete your accounts. If you're still concerned about missing out on shit, there's still better ways of keeping up with social media than by having an active account.

There are better ways of spending your time than by using Twitter.
